I didn't want to hijack the other thread on the OP looking to get his first diesel. I bought my first ('14 Ram Mega 4x4) diesel in December and love it. I do see alot of posts about deleting this and that on diesels... I'm a long time very experienced gas vehicle person (nut & bolt rebuilds), but new to diesel. In the gas world you still have folks that recommend against converting a carb vehicle to Fuel Injection for all the reasons one might come up with, which all really end up being about the talking head not understanding Fuel Injection, and being much easier to throw a rock, than learn something new.

My questions are not about performance, I get various modifications and deletes when looking to increase performance. For the average owner (not hauling a 12k trailer weekly, etc) and for say model year 2012 and above, not Mfr specific (trying to learn something about diesels, not why a PS is better than my Cummins) what and why do you recommend deleting something for general driveability and maybe a mileage increase? I'm really happy with my 370HP-800 ft lbs torque and want to understand why I should change the system my engine mfr designed?

Look up EGR cooler and what it does. Once you understand what it does it will anwser why it kills engines, thus why people want it gone.

Also look into clogged DPF. That was really what was killing the 6.4 PSD. The problem with the DPF is that whenever the truck goes to "clean" it, it can never completely clean the filter so over time the filter will get clogged. Also from what I've been told by a few people that a combination of the emission systems are bad for the turbos.

Get an EGR. Don't think twice. That is all.

They systems people are talking about deleting have nothing to do with making the truck produce the power it does or how it runs. They are simply add ons forced by the govt to reduce emissions. They cause problems with the truck, higher egt's which will shorten turbo life and the egr system puts crud out of the exhaust back into the motor, not a huge issue with gas motors, but when burning something sooty like diesel its an issue.

The trucks that run urea have far fewer issues with the DPF and tend to get better mileage than the previous versions that just had DPF. In your comparison of only 2014 and up models I believe they all have urea.

I have the infamous f350 7.3. I love it and have not done anything to the motor or components. Would any of you powerstroke lovers suggest that I do this to my truck?

I an currently looking to tune and delete the cat and DPF on my F250 6.4L. The people I know that have done this state more power, if you wanted it (you can add anything from 0-350hp with the right tune and CAI) and better MPG.If you choose to go this route do your research and be prepared to spend some $$$$.

Your truck is pre emissions, you got nothing to worry about.

Also if you plan to add power also instead of just deleting the emissions equipment you will need to do something with your transmission if you have an auto. If you don't budget enough for a new one a couple thousand miles down the road.

A good friend toasted his tras in less than 10k miles on a 6.7 cummins. He wished he would have taken my and several others advice.

When that DPF fails get rid of all the emissions crap my buddy's 6.4 came alive!

Here's a good link, I ripped mine out and had an oiler cooler put in. Coolant filter should be in soon, upgraded my down pipe the other day and repaired the y pipe you can see the EGR is gone!

Better mileage, no more regens, sounds better, performance, and your engine isn't breathing it's own farts anymore.

Had a 6.4L Stroke, tuned it using SCT Livewire and had KEM tunes added, 75hp for towing, 225hp for race fun, and 350hp for street driving. The biggest issue with the SCT was I couldn't switch on the fly, took about 20 minutes to switch out tunes. It got a full exhaust system fro the down pipe back. Never did a CAI, but did a EGR block plate. Truck before tunes got about 12.5 mpg, after it got 13.5mpg. In Colorado around Crested Bute it got 18-19mpg but smoked like a sailor when it just idled, when I gave it normal throttle it really ceated a scene, when going over Monarch Pass it became a traffic hazard. I wish I had my tune with me so I could return to stock, live and learn I guess. The trans took a dump on me, it couldn't find a gear while driving in traffic, quickly revved to 5K rpm's and caught 3rd gear. It stayed in 3rd gear after that, no more 1st and 2nd or 4th and 5th.

Mine will stay stock... just like all my other trucks.... ill change the DPF when needed.

i have the 6.0 powerstroke. I had planned to leave it all stock. since then I did the egr delete new gaskets new studs oil cooler rebuild new 4 inch downpipe straight piped. I also replaced the y pipe. Truck runs very good and plenty of power

My super duty has left me stranded once for clogged dpf. It will not happen again. That costs me six bills. Double delete is two grand and it's less than 10k miles away.

If it goes into limp mode while driving, toss it in to neutral, turn off and then on. Don't recommend it for long distance but it will reset it. Don't know if it will work on a 6.7 but will on 6.4

Have 13 6.7 Ram 3500. Drove it from the dealership to the diesel performance shop had the deletes done with programer and straight pipe installed(left muffler in line). Never once has it let me down. Better mileage, performance, and the guys at the lube shop say every time that it has the cleanest oil in any diesel they have ever seen.

forgot it has 99,000 miles and some change on it now.

The Re-gen also causes oil contamination via diesel 3-4% in a 5000 mile oil change interval. For the owners that choose not to delete the DPF which will stop regeneration I would highly recommend adding Archoil friction reducer to the motor oil. There is a ton of information on the web if you want to research.
