How many acres in size? Do you have tractor and implements? Is there livestock that can get to the plot?

I agree with stxranchman. Lots of good natural stuff out there right now, with all the rain we've had. Ask yourself, do you really need to plant right now? We don't. We'll wait until september or early October and disc, root plow, plant and pray. It always works. You can spend a lot of money on spring planting and get bad results. Native range is what the deer eat, mostly. Save your money for corn.

I want to try to make my place a convenience for the deer in the area In Hopes that they will hang around till bow season or at least have my place as a repetitive habit lol. I have one place that is 60 acres and another that is 125 acres. Neither has livestock and I do have everything I need to plant it, I was gonna plant about 5 acres at each... Whatch Ya think. I don't mind spending the time and a little money on some seed...

Call Turner Seed Company in Breckenridge and get you a soil test.

Like stxranchman said, get a soil test and find out what's your soil can provide, then you can choose the seed and fertilizer, to make up for what's missing in the natural forage. There are a lot of things deer will eat but it's best to supplement with something they need. I would think that think that you'll want to have something available when things start drying up at the end of June.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I've done it several times just South of Bowie. Deer pretty well ignored it. The grass hoppers appreciated it.

Go to http://www.mbsseed.com/ Click "wildlife" on the left side bar. They have dealers in Decatur. Their Deer Spring blend is as good as you will find close to "here", if you want easy. As mentioned, 1st thing I would do is spend $20 on the soil test. I don't fool with spring plots much anymore for the reasons mentioned, but if you look at the seed, most of these plant will come in mid-late summer when deer may need it more. You ares still gambling on everything coming together before the heat sets in, Fall plot has a higher percentage of success IMO. Anther thought, black oil or native sunflower would work as well and you may pull dove in like crazy later, deer like it too. Go here for soil sample info (bottom of page are links) http://soiltesting.tamu.edu/

We've done well with milo and sunflowers from time to time in the few bottomland areas with dirt. Just takes time and money. That's why this year we will skip that. Let ma' nature, corn, and some protein with mineral blocks carry them through. Unless you have some excellent farmland, you can spend a lot of time, effort, and money and end up with poor results. If you've got good dirt, it never hurts to plant milo or sunflowers. This year there seems to be a lot more rain, so it may come up.

Mow, wait a week, roundup, wait a week, plow, spread soybeans (or lablab), lightly disc in and top with 50 to 100lbs of 10-10-10 depending on how good of soil you have. Easy to tell based on what if anything is growing there now. I usually tell people to do a soil test, but I have planted several places in that county and the above will do you fine. You are not planting for food right now.....you are planting for food in July/August when everything else in burnt up and mature. Come September 1st, disc your plot in and plant Oats/Wheat/turnips (65%/33%/2%) and top with about 50 to 100lbs per acre of 46-0-0 (you can get this a lot cheaper at the feed store usually). I am getting it for about $18/per 100lbs right now (you can also use 10-10-10 or higher). Also this fall (sept 1st) I would plant a plot of alfalfa. It doesn't do very well the first year, but really kicks in the next spring. This will give you something your neighbor probably doesn't have and they love it.
With all this said, I am experimenting with Milo and Sunflower mix with my soybean this year on one of my many places. They seem to love the milo up north and I want to try in southern Oklahoma this year. Come September, I will be bow hunting over a plot of alfalfa first.
