Been extremely difficult year for me to pull toms off of hens. Tried several different times of day with success coming at random it seems.

First bird for us this year was an afternoon hunt where the hen came in before the tom with 2 toms behind the dominant bird. My fiance Laura got this tom at 28 yards with her 20 ga after about a mile hike through a creek and an hour wait between the birds and their roost.

After her bird it was my turn and this year i wanted to try with a bow. Having misjudged distance before and undershot a tom my second year of turkey hunting i knew the challenge was real but having just re-strung my bow i was itching to put it to use. After a week of practice at 20 yards i had some confidence i just needed the birds cooperation. After an unsuccessful morning hunt where i toughed it out 3 hours hoping a tome would leave the hens on the property i was trying i finally left and moved to a different property. Around 10:20 i pulled onto the property and was in the woods with decoys and bow 5 min later. I let out a loud calling sequence with no answer i started heading south to move a few hundred yards and call again. About 100 yards later i hear a late gobble and boy was he close. I run about 65 yards and hunker for cover quickly trying to get my hen decoy out of my bag. Just as i am pulling her out i see the tom come around the cedar tree 40 yards ahead and i know he has seen me. Luckily i was crouching in full camo and I move smoothly further in the cover and call as he goes back behind the cedar tree. With much luck he answers and i know now that there is no time for decoys. I nock an arrow and continue to cluck and mouth call as he answers repeatedly. After what seems forever he comes ducking under the cedar and cover and i breathe a sigh of relief as i think he is a young Jake. As he moves closer staring daggers into my limited cover i see he is a good tom and my first thought is dear lord when am i going to draw my bow now. I have no options and no decoys as distractions when he goes behind the most piddly small piece of leafy cover and i attempt to draw placing my bow as close to the vines as possible. I draw slowly as i reach my break-over point he sees me and gives out that awful warning cluck. The tom is on the move now leaving me from 15 to 20 yard range when he goes through an opening and i let my arrow fly. The resounding thud is heard over my heart beating out of my chest as my arrow passes though the wing chest cavity and exits the other wing-a full pass through! The tom doesn't know what hit him and comes running/flying straight at me as i exit my meager cover running to chase him down he flies into a barbwire fence and loses most of his breast feathers. The time is now 10:30 and I'm tagged out in 10 minutes. This was without a doubt one of the most memorable hunts I've ever had and the only regret i have is no video footage of an incredible story.
