So I have a 5.56 SBR and going to start building my next AR soon but can't decide on caliber. I have a .308 Tikka that is my go to hunting gun but I'm considering a 12 inch .308. Also considering a 7.62x39 or a 6.8. Would mostly be used for pig hunting shots 150 or less. Also considering a 9mm just because it would be fun. I have suppressors that would work on all calibers listed.

Pig hunting less than 150 yards - 7.62x39 gets the vote for me just due to ammo cost.

I'd say with the cost of the new PSA LR308 uppers and lowers I'd do a 308 SBR build. $600 for the initial gun $200 tax stamp. The PSA uppers are either carbine or midlength gas systems anyway so get Morgan at Class3Machining to cut the barrel down and rethread for $80 and you got a $880 308 SBR.

Although I'm not sure of the performance of a SBR 308, I can shoot my 16" 308 pretty far so I'm guessing 150 yards out of a 12" gun wouldn't be hard at all.

Plus its just cool as hell to have a SBR 308 something that not a lot of people have. I know BCJ on this forum has one, but I believe its a HK91 308 SBR.

I would build an upper for your existing SBR in all the small frame calibers you want then build a 308 SBR. That's just me though.

Also 6.5 Creedmoor AR SBR would be cool. That's on my short list.

We talked about this, 10mm. Not going to get your distance but the cool factor is there

Y no .300 BLK?

I know unless you reload the ammo is stupid expensive, but still a neat little round.

If not a .300 blk then a 7.62x39

6.8 would weigh less than the .308 and be plenty for your intended purpose; additionally, could you get away with just building the upper and using the 5.56 lower to drive it, or does an SBR have to be a complete rifle for FED purposes?

My current SBR is a sig 556 so I can't change uppers unfortunately. I'm leaning toward 308 and saw the PSA lowers were pretty cheap. I already have quite a bit of 308 ammo as well. I've never been really impressed with 300blk. I know it's more my fault than the round but I've had a few pigs run off with 300blk subs. Almost all the pigs I've shot with 308 fall over dead.

I think those lowers that take Glock mags are sweet.

Given that, I would vote .308 then. Lots of options if you ever decided to change it up.

This statement confuses me. Are you comparing apples to apples here? Are you talking about 300blk subs not working, but 308 subs do work? or are you comparing 300blk subs to 308 supersonic?

Also, if you build a 308 SBR, are you going to suppress it? I would think that 308 supersonic loads would be pretty harsh on a can, although I could be mistaken.

If you're looking at 7.62x39 you might want to consider taking another look a 300 blackout supersonic. I wouldn't care to use subs for a hunting application but the supers work great for the distances you've mentioned.

Sorry if I confused you, wasn't trying to compare them. I have not had good luck with 300blk so I don't want to put a bunch of money into one.

That could be an option as I've only ever used subs

Have you tried 300blk supersonic? It's very comparable to one of your options (7.62x39), and it will actually run reliably in an AR. Anything going subsonic velocities is going to suck for hunting.

I haven't. I will def look into it. I do like the idea of same mags as my 556 and all that.

I'm lusting for a suppressed 9mm sbr right now. I think it would be a lot of fun and relatively economical to do a lot of shooting with.

They're already subsonic.

Haha if someone made one for Sig mags I'd be all over it.

if its gonna be an AR platform go .300BLK, if not SBR an AK, you can do an AK about the same price as a nice AR upper
