Well the place I hunt was void of turkeys until this spring. Only get a chance to go up every so often so last time out some showed up and I did not have the shotgun. Planning on going in 2 weeks. I have no knowledge of Turkey hunting other than to use a shotgun. The turkeys are showing up at one of my feeder and then make their way out into the open field afterwards. My question is I've heard it may be illegal to shoot turkeys under a feeder? Also what round for the 12ga or 410 would be good?

I'm not sure about the feeder shooting question. But, I like Winchester XX 3" #5 shot out of my 12 gauge. They come 10 to a box. Academy and WalMart should both have them.

I would go with the 12 gauge and I just started using the Winchester XR Longbeards in 3.5 #5 Shot with some great results. As far as the feeder question I believe you can depends on what county you are in.

Hunting turkey under a feeder is probably OK but like someone mentioned it's a good idea to call your local game warden to find out what's legal in your county.

There's a "find a warden" tool at http://tpwd.texas.gov/warden/ .

I may be wrong, but I thought you could hunt turkeys under a feeder and with a rifle if you wanted.
Easterns in E Tx on the other hand has to be shotgun or archery only and not over bait.

This is correct...No baiting and shotgun/archery only for easterns. In rio country where the limit is 4 turkeys, you can hunt near a feeder and use a rifle ...although that takes away from the experience of actually calling them in. I'm not sure about the special rio counties where you're only allowed to harvest 1 bird.

I like the 3" 2x4's or 4x6 turkey loads, but have killed them with 5 and 6 bird shot out of a full choke many times. If your calling them in that is. Get a good box call or slate call, they are almost idiot proof, then get a few diaphragm calls and learn those, then you can go hands free.

Your probably just now seeing turkey since many winter one place and summer at another, they will still travel back and forth, but they will go where the food and security are.

good luck, calling them in, it is addictive fun, just busting one as it walks by, or is standing at a feeder, is mehh

I can't say enough good things about the Federal Heavyweight #7 loads.

Devastating to a turkey's noggin.

Federal Premium #5 for turkey is my recommendation.

Don't hunt over bait. There is nothing better than calling them suckers in. Turkey hunting is absolutely amazing. Probably my number one! Be patient and don't over call. Sometimes they come right up on you without ever responding and sometimes they come in hot and heavy. When hens come in, I like to play with them and calk after they leave. They will keep coming back for awhile. Great decoys.

I once worked on a Tom that lasted over an hour with a buddies help. It took forever! That Tom was the king and had a bunch of hens and Jakes with him. My buddy repositioned himself to call as I watched/waiting. He would dance every time that hen sound came out. It was so fun because of how long the experience lasted. I nailed that sucker! Very nice Tom and a great night around the camp fire

Thanks all. Any info on a 410 load for my son? He is not comfortable with the 12 12ga. I'm assuming with the 410 he will have to be pretty close in.
