When my wife and I found out we were pregnant I got an idea. I picked up a Burr Oak acorn and tried to sprout it. Sure enough it sprouted and I planted it in the front yard.

Here is our baby boy and the "Baby Tree" I hope to keep taking pictures of them every year. So far they are 6 mo old.

If a deer shows up and eats the baby tree, what does it mean?

That's great. Cute little feller and a great native tree to plant. They'll grow fast.

Little suckers can surprise you when you're holding them and all the sudden they chomp down on your shoulder or neck.

I think I have more to worry about gophers than deer. I did plant it in a hole lined in chicken wire, so hopefully it will be safe!!!

If you do have deer in your tard ever, put something around the tree. I planted 3 about that size last year (burr oaks). 2 of em got eaten in one night and never recovered. Cool idea

Didn't know deer would eat them.

I have some on occasion that come up into the back yard, but never seen them venture past the brush line and almost always only at night. I now have neighbors between me and the creek bottom they came out of so I doubt it but may put some mesh wire around it.

Never thought of that when they are born. I like to plant a tree when a relative passes away. It's a living memorial

I hope that chicken wire isn't very robust, or else it will choke the roots as the tree gets older. The roots will grow through it now, but as the roots become thicker the wire will cut into them and essentially cut them off. You won't see any kind of detriment from this for years and then all of the sudden the tree will get sick and die.

If the wire is cheap, you can hope it rusts out enough before all this happens and the roots will just break the rusty wire. Hope for your and your kids sake, that's what happens.
