Hello all, thanks for welcoming me to your forum. I’m from Illinois, hope you won’t hold that against me. I used to live near Houston, plan to visit friends there soon, and want to hunt hogs while I’m there. Plan is to make it an annual event. I plan to buy a new gun for the occasion, as I fear none of these will be optimal:
Uberti 1873 lever action in 357 mag Colt LE 6920 in 5.56 Beretta A400, 12g, smooth bore
Trying to decide between a rifle chambered in .308 and a new shotgun with a rifled barrel. The only reason for me to consider the rifled shotgun is that I could use it here to hunt deer. Anyway, My research indicates the .308 will be fairly perfect for hog hunting, but what about the shotgun? At what distances or other circumstances will I be under-gunned? Will bringing a shotgun to this party leave me wishing I had the rifle? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Any of the guns you have listed that you have will take a pig down with a head shot. Use a slug in the shotgun and it will do some major damage.
If you want a 308 for hunting that is a good round also. Distance just depends on where you are hunting. Most of my kills are within 50 yards while in the wood.

I'd use the 5.56 with a good bullet in the 65 grain range (Sierra Game king or Nosler). Welcome to the forum and best of luck.

It's kind of split down the middle as to whether it's appropriate or not. What made me decide that I shouldn't rely on it is that certain places won't even allow you to hunt with it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixEhORmAe9o

Best Wishes Beretta does not, I wasn't aware that someone else might make a barrel that I could use on my gun though, I'll check that out. If I go this route though, do you think I'll regret it? Will I be limited to shots below certain distances due to accuracy or power limitations? I've never shot slugs.

Will I be limited to shots below certain distances due to accuracy or power limitations? I've never shot slugs. wasn't sure if Beretta sold rifled barrells ta interchange with their smooth bore. That could get expensive buy individual shotguns. The mosburg barrells are easy to interchange. Been using .223 cheap .55gr fmj taking close shots, its usualy thick area's & public land. No complaints. Hunt with several that use 12ga rifle bore shotgun. Big size differrence. Am sure the people you'll be hunting with will let ya fire few rounds ta cheack for accracy, rifled shotguns can reach out their with great accracy. Sorry not much help, others on here with more experience with shotgun info, barrel twist, different shot loads. Been shooting mussy loader since 70's taken deer & hogs. These new inlines way more accurate than me .45. Best Wishes Edit: what is legal for deer hunts in Illinois?

Only shotguns and pistols are legal for deer in illinois, which is the only reason I'm considering a shotgun for hogs.

So the .308 would be for hog hunting... can ya use rifle barrelled slug sshotguns for deer in Illinois? Alot depends on area you'll be hog hunting here, every hog i've taken could have been taken with rifled shotgun. How comforable are ya with the lever action .357 ? my guns are collecting dust. Best Wishes on your dessission

First off welcome to the forum!!
I have used all three calibers on hogs and all did a great job. I used a Ruger ranch rifle .223 and lots of hogs and the biggest hog was 125lbs, used a Rossi model 92 lever gun .357mag and got a few hogs, all close range up to 75lbs, and shot hogs with a Benelli semi auto shotgun 12ga buckshot and killed 40 or 50 hogs up to 150lbs out of a helicopter.
I would not hesitate to use any off those calibers again but with that said I understand the need for a new gun and what better reason than needing a gun that is better suited for hogs and if you can afford it get the 308 now and then the shotgun later on when deer season rolls around so you have the excuse that you have to use a shotgun for that..

Thanks for all your thoughts. I've been internet gun shopping all afternoon and I'm falling in love with a Browning BAR in .308.

A rifled 12 will do the trick from 60-100 yards out for sure. I use a HR single shot and have for years while deer/hog hunting. Great gun! .308 will destroy any big game animal and like others have said the weapons you have already will do the trick with a head shot. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice you have. But if your hunting deer in IL buy yourself a nice rifled shotgun or interchangeable barrel for the one you already have so you can use it more than once. Smooth bore with buck shot is made for close encounters in the woods. Such as a spot and stalk.

Get the 308, as you will want accuracy and power on the large boars. I have used shotgun slugs many times and they are fun on the smaller pigs. However, I want the rifle for the big pigs.

How about a BLR 308!

Wait, you can't shoot deer with a rifle in Illinois? Nope, something about large wide open flat fields with (relatively speaking) high population that makes rifles capable of shooting several miles be considered unsafe. Shorter range guns like shotguns, muzzle loaders, and straight walled pistols are much more acceptable. Here in VA we have different rules by county. We have one county that is Archery only and several that only allow shotguns with buckshot.

I used to live there in Gurnee. Quick, come back to Texas, permanently! I'll always miss Texas. Maybe I'll get back when I retire. Anyway, decided on this gun, DPMS G2 Hunter (.308) with a Leupold VXR 2-7x33 on it. Thanks for everyone's help and comments.

Welcome to the forum. I have a BLR (not *BAR*) in 308 - love it. For pigs I always use my AR in 223. It works, no reason to change though I am tempted to try my shotgun.
My botnet is bigger than yours.
