What eats the tips of cactus, you see in the pic where its black where something ate it. no cows on the place but there were a few on a year ago so I assume they did it

What eats the tips of cactus, you see in the pic where its black where something ate it. Deer, pigs, but most likely, RATS. I've seen them eating my cactus and then run under the house. High protein, moisture. They love them.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

I see it all over our place but never witnessed anything eating it. Some of it is eaten waste high, I guess the rats can climb without getting stuck by the cactus needles.

Rats, mice, hogs, and javi's will eat cactus pods. There was some research done many years ago that showed cactus was 45% of a deer's diet during late Jan-Feb and August in South Texas.

There was some research done many years ago that showed cactus was 45% of a deer's diet during late Jan-Feb and August in South Texas. Seems like almost every year during the jan-feb time period we see an increase in cactus eating. I have seen deer walk up to a feeder carrying a piece of cactus in their mouth put it down eat a while and pick it back up and take it with them when they walk off.
