What are the age requirements? Does my 9 year old need to have completed her hunter's safety education to participate? Do you recommend TYHP? Any information any of you with TYHP experience can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yes to the education, and at 9 she's old enough. Their hunts are highly recommended, great volunteers who are there to help educate your child enjoy and hunt the outdoors. My 2 boys got their first Deer and Turkey on TYHP hunts. They are well organized, well run, very safe and you get to hunt on places you might never do otherwise. For Youth weekend this year, my 15 yr old got his first Turkey, the trip cost us $100. The next weekend, hunters from all over the country paid $1,200 to go shoot the same birds.

Some hunts have great accomodations, others you may be in a tent.

My son is 17 and has been on 5 TYHP hunts. Later this year when he turns 18 he plans on becoming a huntmaster with them. These hunts have been great. He has learned so much. A lot of things parents try to teach kids they just say "Sure Dad" and it goes in one ear and out the other. Being taught these things from men and women you barely know they seem to grasp it better. TYHP is a great program. I've never met anyone in the program I didn't like. Like Charlie said you will get the chance to hunt ranches that normally cost a small fortune to hunt. You will be sitting right there in the stand with him. Last year we hunted a ranch for two days and my son took two whitetail does and an Axis doe. He filled our freezer in one weekend. All it cost was $150 and gas to get there. We have seen more trophy deer than you could ever imagine.
Get your son or daughter enrolled. I think you'll be happy you did. You'll make memories that will last a lifetime.
Yes he does have to go to hunter safety. He will also have to show them that he is familiar with the gun he uses and knows how to shoot it.

Don't mean to side track your thread but don't forget to look at the TPWD drawing hunt for youth hunts. You can view these booklets online and sign up to get the booklet listing hunts mailed to you in early summer. And they are practically free. Good luck and happy hunting.

I'm interested in this program for my son. He is 14 and has been on a few of the TPWD hunts with a little success.

The TYHP hunts will be for does and maybe a spike. The ranchers need to get rid of them. One hunt we went on the rancher had 100 that he didn't need. What a better way to thin the herd. He had 15 or 20 kids out in different groups over 5 days. The ranches you go to are all very nice. You will see a lot of deer. The kids all get a chance to harvest one. The only hunt my son did not get one we saw 42 bucks and no does. The other kids on the hunt all got a spike and a doe.
The ranchers are great to allow the TYHP to have a hunt. The huntmasters are all volunteers. They don't have but one person in the whole program that gets paid.
It really puts a smile on the face of any rancher or hunter who volunteers their time to this program.
