^^^ This, if you cannot hit what your're aiming at, I dont care how fast you are pushing it, aint going to happen if you do not hit it. I like my 6.5-284's because I have 3 of them, and I shoot them every week, but I have 2 .280 AI'(which I love) that I hunt with, and I love as well. (i love the rifles for differnt reasons) End of the day, you have to hit what you are aiming at and there are a lot of choices out there that will do what you want to do without breaking the banks

And, if you use high BC bullets in more moderate velocity calibers that offer a good selection of high BC bullets, you will retain whatever velocity you have and still have less drop and drift vs. another cartridge with scorching muzzle velocity but loaded with low BC bullets.
For example, a lowly .243 loaded with a 105 A-Max will outperform a .25-06 with most 100 - 117 gr bullets at LR simply due to superior BC. .25 caliber doesn't have a good selection of ballistically efficient bullets as 6mm does.

Jason, thats a pretty "nice" response...and spot on. Might turn your head yet on a 270 ...or mebbe not...I won't hold my breath on it anyway. Good equipment, good glass, dedication and a willingness to learn can even teach an old dog with an open mind new tricks. Ron

Ask Judd how hard-headed I am. Give me a 270 and I'll put a 7mm barrel on it.
As mentioned about BC, I still want all I can get. For instance my 6.5 Creedmoor has a G1 or .585, and a meager muzzle velocity of 2800 fps. Yesterday and the day before I cold bored 700 yard 2 MOA. Then hit the little 1 MOA and went home. Good BC, fair velocity, and lots of practice is my prescription. Most of that for me now is reading wind.

At Rifles Only a few years ago, there were 2 LEO guys that shot only 308. They ran department issued ammo. They ran 168 SMK for the match and 175 SMK for anything 800 and out. One of them finished 3rd, and the other guy finished not far behind him. This was in a class of top shooters running all kinds of fast 6mm and 6.5mm rifles. I was thoroughly impressed. All they shot was 308, and knew their rifle and ammo really well. A lot of the time, it's the Indian, and not the arrow. I see it often when shooters spend too much time worrying about the best or highest BC bullet, but do not take the time to learn their rifle and ammo. Pick a round that you can afford to shoot often enough to get proficient, and everything else will take care of itself.

NOW, I just need to sneak out to JG's and see if the infamous Swaro BDC dial is accurate to 800??? That scope is not allowed on my range. You may shoot the cattle in the pasture east of my place. I'll only shoot a cow if I'm aiming at it

I've heard rumors that the fella that runs rifles only is pretty good with one as well.

I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO LOAD MY OWN AMMO!!!! I also need more time to spend loading.....maybe someday
Any time you are wanting to build a rifle that is not a common caliber you need to reload.
Before you get a wild cat cartridge learn to reload and you will find the time.
You will be happy you did.
+1 Droptine, I've got a document, I wrote for Korean Redneck as he has tons of questions. It seemed to have helped him. BigA just requested it as well. I'd be happy to send the document to you. I did not post it in the Reloading section due to the probability of it causing much banter, so I just keep it until someone asks for it. Yes, please send it to me also.

Based on what Derrick mentioned with his experience, I'd have to go back to the 280 A.I. leave the 6.5 mm out of it.
Load it with a 168 gr. Berger and let it eat! I like this idea
hold on Newt, we got a runaway

I've got a .280 AI with a 25" bbl and get 3250fps with Nosler 140gr Accubond factory loads. Have not done a great deal of load development but get 3200 fps with 140gr TTXs and 3100fps with 150gr Ballistic Tips. No pressure signs and great accuracy with both.
I'm thinking about a 6.5-284, what is the best twis rate to get?
