we are going back this weekend for serious shed hunting, golf, fishing, eating and drinking, and taking more pictures of the flowers - should be a good time

Deer, pigs, but most likely, RATS. I've seen them eating my cactus and then run under the house. High protein, moisture. They love them.

I see it all over our place but never witnessed anything eating it. Some of it is eaten waste high, I guess the rats can climb without getting stuck by the cactus needles.

Rats, mice, hogs, and javi's will eat cactus pods. There was some research done many years ago that showed cactus was 45% of a deer's diet during late Jan-Feb and August in South Texas.

Seems like almost every year during the jan-feb time period we see an increase in cactus eating. I have seen deer walk up to a feeder carrying a piece of cactus in their mouth put it down eat a while and pick it back up and take it with them when they walk off.

I have some older video of a couple of 3-4yr old bucks eating cactus in October from La Salle County.
