Had a mule on the farm we coon hunted with. Could jump a 5 strand fence, Laid a blanket over top wire, led him up to it and whacked him on the azz. Over he went. Mount back up and chase the dogs. Dang good animal.

That's great, congrats to them!
My grandpa used to raise and compete in cutting horse competitions. He'd sell a lot of horses for some serious green, and then turn around and consistently beat those folks on his small, wiry but very athletic gelding. In one weekend, that horse won youth under 16 world champ, men's non-pro world champ and pro world champ. That was every competition he was entered in. After my grandpa got too old to ride, folks would still pay him good money to ride that horse. Sometimes the most overlooked and undervalued competitor surprises everyone.

Congrats all around. The rider, the mule and the trainer and coach. I,m working with 3 mules and consider them very challenging but fun to train.

That's awesome, made my day. Much congrats to rider and Neena! She didn't even have to rent the mule and rode her like she owned it!!
In HS we were campaigning a stud, son of Sailor's Night. We were at an AQHA show in Abilene, I think it was. For those who don't know, AQHA shows award points for placing, at a certain number of points in a particular skill the horse gets a Region of Merit, and the breeding fee goes up. Bigger the class the more points up for grabs. Sailor Boy was a reigning, working cow horse, and calf roping horse, had never team roped once. A pair of brothers, won't say the name but they're both very well known still, were going around paying entries into the team roping to pump up the points for their horses. I can't remember which of the brothers rode him, but Sailor Boy won the team roping class and beat their own horses. I remember Dad trying to give them their entry fee back but, being the gentlemen they were and are, they declined and laughed about it, at least on the outside.

Sad turn of events today. Was floored to find out that our trainer got a call and was informed that they would no longer allow mules to enter their shows. They bowed to pressure from a number of parents/trainers that got their nose out of joint and some how feel the mule had a competitive advantage(???WTH???). We hadn't planned on making a habit of bringing mules to their events, but this decision reeks. I've called the local news stations to see if we can get some coverage. Never thought I'd be an advocate to end mule discrimination.

Thought I'd share this with the THF family... Got to be part of seeing a really cool life lesson unfold this weekend at horse show near our place in Argyle. A 12-yr old girl who takes regular riding lessons at our facility, and volunteers with our disabled lessons on the weekend, decided to enter the Hidden Lakes Hunter Jumper Show to get experience on doing "ground work" for judges. The pony she's training to show jump isn't ready for the ring yet, so our trainer told her she could pick one of our therapy animals to take... and she choose Neena. As you can see in the pic's she isn't your typical show horse, but since she was entering equitation classes, it didn't really matter a lot. These classes are judged primarily on the riders abilities to execute the required disciplines. Expectations were pretty low as this was just a training exercise for her, and there was plenty of competition (about 7-8 horses in each division). As you can see from the pic's, she and Neena kicked butt and out of 8 events they won six 1st's, a 2nd and one 3rd. (The third place actually came in a jumping class over cross rails). And where awarded the Championship in both divisions they entered! There were a lot of shocked parents watching their kids ride $15K show horses and mumbling about the judges being crazy. In the end a lot of people learned a good lesson around the payoff for hard work, effort and attitude, all of which this girl exhibits in spades. Feel good story of the month!!!! Boy you know some parents lost their ever loving mind!!!!! I would have to say the value of that particular mule just shot up!!!!

Good news is they can't undo any of this, the girl won fair and square on the cheap and everyone is butt hurt. Whaaaaa!! I have a reporter contact if you would like me to check on it for you let me know.
