You could not be more correct. I pass by pastures all the time and it's amazing how much money is standing out there. I am building a decent herd myself.

Not sure what the exact going rate for cattle are right now, but I tend to just multiply them by $3,000 when I see a group of them to estimate their gross worth.

I have seen more cattle in pastures between post and Roswell this spring than ever before. We also have notice more bull haulers on the road headed east than in the last 5 years.

Yeah, Im really debating our our latest calf we steered out to put in the freezer. He is probably 350 lbs right now. Going to be some good eating but he sure would bring a lot of money, lol.

My buddy just bought a bunch of all black heifers. $1750 a head.

I offered $500 for every calf that hits the ground. Never heard back from him.

Just curious, how much is a round bale of coastal (nothing too fancy, doesn't have to be horse quality) going for these days? How many of y'all are even feeding hay now that the spring green-up has begun? I remember paying $100 a bale, maybe over $10 per square bale, back in the late 2000s, before my dad's family sold our ranch out from under us.

Good horse quality square bales are about $7.00ea right now. Descent fertilized coastal is going for around $50.00 a bale.

Last truck load of coastal cost me $100/bale delivered. Cubes $378/ton. Double what I was paying ten years ago.

Feed stores around here are asking $75-$90 rnd bale, in the field you can do $55 up for clean coastal.

I have seen her up, I have seen her down, and I seen a lot of her somewheres in the middle.

Boys, make no mistake the market can crater as quick as she went up. I'm holding some back and damn thankful I don't have to buy in this market.

Mainly because cattle numbers are down....way down. No rain = no grass = no cows left in the country.

My numbers are down 65%. Lots of ranchers sold out. I have ten different owners that join my main ranch. Three have cattle left on them.

Cost too much to feed them during the drought/tanks dried up and the Dakotas got hammered and lost several hundred thousand head. Plus BLM has tightened up their AUM numbers.

I paid $45/round bale for some very good hay for this last winter. Havent fed any hay for about a month now. Lots of green out there now. With all the water we have had, hay shouldn't be any more this year.

You can pay a crap load more for hay if you buy it at a feed store or have it delivered. I buy it straight from the guy who bales it and haul it myself.

We baled enough to make it over Winter, but still had some Alfalfa/Orchard (80/20) shipped in from Kentucky at $65/roll. Calves are already weaned and things are looking good.

Thanks for the hay prices, guys. I'm always curious. Good to see that they've got a little cheaper with the better weather. Hope it stays that way for a little while for you guys. I wish we still had some land, I miss running cows even though it could be a headache sometimes.

Tom Perini ( steak house owner) at Buffalo Gap was on Tv about 6 weeks ago talking about the price of beef and said that nation wide the number of cattle was as low as it was in middle 1950's due to the drought. I know it ran my family off of the farm.
