A client of mine has a son who is an Avery Outdoors pro staff member and an avid, avid hunter. Greyson is 11 years old and has been on more hunting trips than most grown men I know, and he shoots better than 90% of them as well.

Check out this Facebook story from his dad:

"The Adventures continue!

We have been on quite a few trips since our last post.

Here is Grey with his personal best elk.

Grey harvested this great herd bull in the mountains of New Mexico this past Oct with a muzzleloader on the last morning of a very hard and physical hunt.

The bull green scored a 342! What is more amazing is that Grey took this bull with one shot at 425 yards with a muzzleloader.
New Mexico as well as a handful of other states allows the use of very modern muzzleloaders that are capable of accurately being effective at very long range distances.

Grey was using a Gun Werks custom muzzleloader - an amazing piece of equipment, but it's only as good as the shooter behind it.
Congrats Grey! Mom and I are very proud of you not only for your shooting skills but more importantly for your determination and never quit attitude."

Well I'm not a math guy, but referred this shooting feat to my resident Math Wizard. Here's his take on it. "How much elevation did he use, at 2500 mv= 1/2 sec= 8' drop. Luck or Texas BS." Wonder what the "Energy in Ft Pounds" that round had when it brung down that Elk? For a 30-06 180 grain slug it would have been less than 1,354 on arrival at the critter.

Thanks for the web link. So the 11 yr old was using a Johnson Muzzleloader with 300 grain Whitetail bullet? I've always read about bullets needing to arrive with 1,600 lb of energy to consistently down big game. The 300 Grain arrives at 400 yds with 920 ft lb. according to their figures. Whatever, their web site has some fine testimonials.

Not sure what he was using, but knew that company would have the ballistics on their ML. That was the quickest one I could find.

He was using a custom Gunwerks muzzleloader: http://www.gunwerks.com/Shooting-Systems/muzzleLoader

This isn't any 11 year old. He's the youngest Avery Outdoors pro staff member ever and has been hunting since he could walk. He'll be on television soon. Check out his Facebook page to see more of the trophies he's taken.

When I read muzzle loader at 400+ yards I was thinking a smooth bore cannon.

I see he was usung a custom spancy one, still
Hard to believe.

Your looking up wrong spec, they are using a sub .50 saboted bullet with a b.c of .400 and 300 gr plus elevation above 6k.

Note that that gun and bullet combination is illegal in some states for ML season...such as CO because it's scoped, smokeless powder and sabot

I'm still trying to get the elk to 342". Awesome job regardless of the score with a muzzleloader.

MuzzleLoader Features

Our Muzzleloader is based on our LRM-500 action. This action features a built in 209 primer holder on the bolt , a removable breechplug and twin rear locking lugs. The barrel features precise dimensions of bore and groove with minimal deviation in diameter from breach to muzzle. The heavy 45 caliber bullet is stabilized in a unique MMP sabot with a fast twist barrel. We offer loads in smokeless powder or black powder substitute that attain 2200 fps muzzle velocity. Combined with a 0.400 G1 BC, a 2200 fps muzzle velocity retains adequate impact velocity for lethality at 500 yards, and deflects only one MOA per 100 yards for a 10 mph wind. That’s only 5 MOA at 500 yards!

In the design and specification process, our focus was on creating a muzzle loader that was easy to load, comfortable to shoot, sub-MOA accurate to 500 yards, and low maintenance. Many of the high performance muzzle loaders on the market suffer from the same maladies, heavy recoil, and difficult and complicated loading and cleaning routines. Mike tested the system with 15 shots fired in under 10 minutes with no cleaning, swabbing, or cooling between shots. The group at 100 yards was less than 1.5 MOA!

The standard rifle scope used when you add the Long Range Package to a Gunwerks Muzzle Loader, is the G7 2.5-10X32 by Nightforce. This scope features a G7 reticle, and a hi-speed zstop elevation turret with a capped low profile windage adjustment. The system is fired on our shooting range to develop a true ballistic profile, then a custom Ballistic Turret is calibrated to match. Now you simply range the target, and dial the distance on the turret.
