How many fawns will a buck sire during a normal breeding season?

Catch the buck you have in question. Strap one of those breeding markers you use on sheep on the buck to see how many does were bred by him at the end of the rut. Piece of cake.

I was reading some of the research facts on one of the South Texas ranches used that the most fawns sired by a single buck during the study was 5 and that numerous sets of twins had different sires. I could have misread it, because that seems awfully low to me. Sort of makes you think twice about letting a good one go to spread his genes around.

IMO the key is to have more than one good buck in the herd.

X2

Everyone passes up that mature buck thinking he is gonna knock up every doe in the pasture, and that's just not the case

If he bred 3 does a year from 3-6 years old he has anywhere from 9-12 fawns if 100% fawn crop.

So in real life how many fawns did he really have in his life? 3-4,5-6 tops?

Genetics are not 100% guaranteed to carry to offspring, the doe has something to do with it also. So how do you know which doe throws good bucks?

If your bucks all look like you want them to then the does should have the same genetics. Key will always be younger does.

I've read the same research, shows 6 to 7 on the top end. B to D ratio probably has alot to do with it too. Those does will get bred. It's just a matter of how hard the bucks run to do it.

But research said the most fawns sired by a single buck was 5.
There is a lot of difference between breeding 20 does and siring 5 fawns.

In a high deer population with high doe/buck and lots of food/cover those doe are not breeding themselves.. pretty common to see 5:1 even 8:1 ratios in Tx.
