Shot at 1000 a few days ago and despite wind going from S/SW to N/NE in between 2 5rd strings the dispersion was nice. I usually don't chrono much for sd or es but shoot for groups. This shows that those are likely pretty low.

Not much dispertion. What was the wind on the clock in relation to the target, during each string?

I shoot straight due north so say 7:00 then 2:00. Wind speeds were 5-10mph then steady 5mph.

Wind up here in the panhandle has been pretty brutal lately. Not just strong but switching around like what you are talking about.

Nice vertical for sure though.

Did the two low impacts happen with the 2 o'clock wind?

We're you using the Mil scope?

Yes the low 4 came from the north wind the top 4 came during the south wind.

Yeah the mil scope is still on it for now.

Is this the norm for a bit higher impact with a tail wind and lower impact with a head wind? Why? Just wondering if this is simply due to the affects on velocity over the entire flight path or other?

Yes it is depending on wind speed. A tail wind can lift and a head wind can deflect low.

Happy to see you recognize the effect of head and tail winds. Months ago I brought up the subject of head and tail wind and several members jumped me saying that had no effect on elevation.

The two ranges I use face either due north or due south so I see it a lot. It might not be much but it's noticeable.

^^^ Yep, Joyce Hornady discussed it back in 1973 I believe.

I'd be willing to bet your ES/SD is low...that's wind.

I'd be a bit nicer of a group if I could read the wind a little bit better. I need a good wind flag since the last one took flight as my mirage reading is a bit lacking and there aren't any natural flags to use.

Aint no wind flags while hunting.

Mirage is your friend, practice, practice, practice. I'm pretty good at reading it but I have, by no means, mastered it.

There is no doubt that I need practice but there are downsides for learning at this location for learning mirage. The other place is easy on mirage and foliage reading but it's a canyon draw type range which is troublesome in it's own way.

For sure. Felt a left to right wind at me on a canyon rim, shot, and it was right to left at the target, 600 yards out. bang

It can be the most stressful shooting. I can hit moa or smaller out to the 550yd line then it would go to crap. Same hold side for before put me opposite so I compensated in the reticle and hit off to original poa. Very frustrating on little targets the silhouette and ipsc style steel was no issue though.

I was shooting and checking dope on my Creedmoor out at my friends ranch here a few weekends ago. He is set up with steel every 100 yards from 100-900. I started at 300 working out, and was perfect all the way out to 700, wind calls pretty much dead on, solid center mass. Held the same call at 800 and was way off the other way. I would shift, and it would go one way. Shift back, go the other. Took 5 rounds to get on steel, and it was the same for my friend. Then we went out to 900 and back to original wind call, and we were both right back on target. The targets were going away up a hill, and zig-zagging across the face of it. Not sure what was going on with the wind at 800, but it was switching and backing, and making it really tough. But just at that distance. Must have just been the way the wind was hitting that hill and coming off of it, but it was pretty crazy.

Terrain construction can funnel winds at times causing miscalculation in wind drifts.
