Looking to seed some deer food plots and I wanted to use a UTV/ATV to seed those areas, instead of the tractor.
Anyone have suggestions on a good spreader to use if I go that direction? Maybe something that would attach to hitch, if we use the UTV...

I have used both hitch mounted and tow behind. I seem to get more control and better coverage with the tow type. The electic motors on the hitch type are not the best. I use it on both the polaris and the elec EZGO.

Gotcha. What tow behind did you use?
My original thought was to hook up a hitch to the front of the UTV (we have a hitch receiver in the front bumper/grill) and then have a little homemade roller we have that we'd tow behind the UTV to cover the seed. We've hand broadcasted before...just looking to streamline things and get some better coverage.

I have one similar to the link below that I bought to mount on the grill on the front of my Kubota RTV or build a bracket to slide in the receiver hitch. I bought it for road feeding but think it would do fine for spreading seeds on a food plot, then drag a piece of chainlink or gate with a couple old tires for weight to cover up the seeds. The flow rate is adjustable. http://www.moultriefeeders.com/moultrie-atv-seed-spreader-with-electric-feedgate bought mine used on Craigslist for $100

I have one of the electric ones that mounts to the rack on my ATV. I got it at BPS about 5 yrs ago and have never had any problems with it. I use it for fertilizer and seed. So far so good. I also use a harrow that I got from BPS depending on what I am doing I will use it with the tines up or down and facing forward or to the rear.

Herd 12 volt Seeder from Kasco is the most accurate one and well built, but expensive.

I use a John Deere, pull-type spreader that I found on Craig's list for $75, which is less than half what it cost for a new one. I also use an ATV to drag a harrow over my plots before and after spreading seed. Dragging it before seeding helps create a more uniform seed bed, and dragging after seeding ensures the seeds are not covered too deep.
All disking and other heavy work is done with a tractor and implements. I mix seed and fertilizer together in large feed buckets before dumping the mixture into the spreader. Mixing seed and fertilizer is a old trick that I learned from the landowner/farmer as a way to get the seed to go further.
I also use an ATV mounted tank and sprayer to kill all grass and weeds before disking.

spreading seed and covering is one thing that dosnt have to be done with a tractor. I like it done with a utv imo because you can maneuver better and get things done faster. Now if you don't have a UTV by all means tractor it is.

Thanks everybody! Appreciate the feedback and ideas. I think I'm going to modify one of those corn feeder that you put on the tailgate of your truck...had a buddy put extra washers under the spring of his spinner, so it had a smaller opening to throw out seed when engaged - and he's been doing that for a few season with great success. I can weld a hitch support for it and have it in front my my UTV, and have something dragged behind it to cover the seed after it is spread - kill two birds with one stone kinda thing.
