I just recently bought some Buckshot and was thinking i should have bought slugs? Which is better for places like LBJ Grasslands? Is Buckshot ok to use out there, or should i take back for some slugs, and if so what kind are good, and load size?
I'm unfamiliar with buckshot and slugs, so rookie questions here... thanks for any help in advance.

Your post doesn't tell much about how you plan to hunt... I assume you are hunting deer (or hogs).
My opinion...use slugs unless you are in the South and hunting with dogs in heavy cover..and shooting at running deer...then buckshot is an option (or possibly coyotes at close range). That said, I personally dislike buckshot but I know guys who swear by it. the range is a lot less than a slug.
If your shotgun has a rifled barrel you can use sabot slugs ...if you have a smooth bore barrel make sure you use a slug that is designed for a smooth bore (like a Remington slugger as an example). A rifled barrel and a sabot slug will give you more range and accuracy than a smooth bore and slugs made for those types of barrels..

Buckshot is fine for thick cover or if you're jump shooting within 30 yards or so. Otherwise, go with slugs. If you're going to use buckshot be sure to see how your gun patterns them. They spread so wide and uneven in some barrels as to be almost useless beyond 20 yards.
My brother-in-law is a taxidermist. Gets in quite a few deer with healed buckshot under the skin.
Slugs are lethal at 100 yards and beyond. Again, seeing how they shoot in your gun is important and limit your shots to the distance at which you can consistently hit a paper plate with the slugs.
If you can't laugh at yourself, give me a call. I'll gladly laugh at you. "I keep trying to see Nancy Pelosi's and Chuck Schumer's point of view, but I can't seem to get my head that far up my [censored]." Senator John Kennedy, Louisiana

I'd go with slugs if it was me. As stated above, I've heard of several deer killed that have old buckshot in them from a previous non-lethal wound. Also, I don't think you'll be able to return the buckshot (can't return ammo for safety reasons) so you'll have to find something to do with the buckshot.

I've shot a lot of deer with buckshot when I lived in Louisiana. The woods were thick so I never shot over 30-40 yards but I've seen a deer shot with buckshot at 76 steps. I would tell my rifle hunting buddies that I liked to make myself part of the woods and let them get close. Guns shoot it different. Make sure you pattern it. The best gun I had to shoot it was a cheap Stevens bolt action. It shot a lot tighter than my high dollar guns.

I agree slugs are the way to go. Like someone said earlier if it's smooth bore shotgun use rifled slugs. They area pretty accurate to a 100 yards. You need to shoot it at different distances to know where it hits.

Agree with what everyone wrote, but would like to point out that it's fun as hell hammering a deer or hog with buckshot from close in. It's devastating. Absolutely rolled a 100 lb sow from my bow stand a couple years back. She didn't take 1 step.

Never had one run off after getting hit with buckshot from 30-40 yds. Do you aim head/neck or body?

I spent a lot of time hunting military bases in VA when I was stationed there. We were restricted to shotguns for deer and I shot a lot of deer with a 12 gauge and saw a lot more deer shot with them as well. We used both buckshot and slugs and I'd give the nod to the slugs. When they hit a deer, it tends to go down right there. Buckshot is deadly as long as the range isn't more than 35-40 yards but a deer hit with buckshot will normally run off (in my personal experience) and often they don't bleed much because the pellets tend to lack enough penetration to shoot clear through a deer. Slugs don't have that problem. Buckshot is better if the ranges are short and the deer is moving. If it is standing still, slugs are the way to go. If I had to pick one of the 2, it would be slugs.

I need to carry some buckshot while turkey hunting. I hit a big pig at 20 yards with 6 shot Saturday and it ran into the sunset. Maybe not sunset since it was 10:30 am.
