So on multiple occasions in the last couple of months I have had one or more skunks get WAY too close to me, or my stand. I certainly do not want to shoot them if I can avoid it, because it will run off the hogs that I am stalking, and/or immerse me in the posthumous spray they always seem to emit. Anyone have any suggestions for how to encourage them to turn around and/or keep on moving without pissing them off? Or I am better off just moving away and hoping they do not notice?

What you want to do is wave your hands over your head to look as large as possible. Then you want to run straight at it shouting kakaaaaa! You must be very confident when you do this. They can smell fear. I'm f done properly they will run off to never return.

Oh yes, listen to bo323. Great idea. I'd really like to watch you do that. In fact, I'll pay money to watch you do that. I'll be standing upwind.

My brother, who knows of such things, says that your average skunk has a stink spraying range of about 13 feet. Just fyi...

Ahhh yes. Your brother is a smart man. I forgot to mention the 13 foot rule. Once you get inside that your golden as long as you jump on the ka and yell kaaaa when you land. As long as you do this they cannot hit you. Almost got you sprayed by leaving that part out.

Your welcome. The idea is to look like a cannery. The skunks natural enemy. Or use a pellet gun from a safe distance.

Skunks can't stand white light , that's how we get rid of them when were yote hunting. Hit them with a white light and they run off

White light. Thanks, I will try that next time, and keep the kakaaaa thing as just a backup plan. Haha

I love to lip sync Romanian pop songs which also has the benefit of making skunks that are close vamoose.

This normally works but every once in awhile one will go rabbit on you(run at the light).

My brother says he shoots them on occasion, and has NEVER had one spray after being shot (with a .22 rifle). I'm not saying my brother is a smart man, but I doubt that he'd lie to me when there's no money involved.

I did see a guy grab one by the tail once. He saw it coming and hid behind a tree. As the skunk walked by, he grabbed the tail and raised the skunk off the ground. He said they must have the hind legs on the ground so that they can squeeze their muscles to spray. I'm not gonna try that myself, but I did indeed witness it once. If you go this route, be sure to hold the skunk at arms length to avoid being bitten. To get rid of the skunk, he stood at the corner of a barn and then tossed the skunk around the corner and ran. The skunk did not spray.

Your Mileage May Vary . . .

Twice now I've shot skunks that sprayed. Both times they were upwind of the house. I body shot one and head shot the other. Both time I got a spray cloud that was impressive in size and even more impressive in stink. Note to self...shoot em downwind. Only downwind.

I have shot some that didn't spray, but don't expect that they won't.

I prefer a .22LR but my .223 is very effective as well. I've even done so with my CCW a couple of times.
