Yesterday the FIL and I went to his deer lease outside of Gruene. We got there about noon. He forgot to bring his box call, so I said "don't worry, I'll call with my mouth". He was saying "BS, you can't do that". I told him to hide and watch. After about 30 minutes of intermittent calling with hen yelps we decide to crack open a couple of brewskis. Sitting on the tailgate I called again, that's when he let loose with a thundering gobble from about 100 yards away. I grabbed my gun and headed for some cedars on the edge of the woods where the bird sounded off. When I yelped he would cut me off with a gobble. He was getting closer to me but I still couldn't see him. About that time I hear kids hollering and banging on a plastic bucket. It was the rancher and his boys checking on cows They ran the bird off. We laughed it off after a couple more beers. Later that evening I started calling again using my mouth only, another gobbler was coming in, problem was we were at the ranch house in the front yard next to the pickup. I scooted out and headed down the entrance road with only my gun. The big bird was running down the road towards me and spotted me before I could hide. That's when he headed down Blieders creek. I never saw him again. All in all it was a good day even with no shots fired. When we were leaving we saw the rancher again. I told him about the earlier incident and he apologized profusely. He then asks us if we knew anything about the owners plans to sell the old place, WTH? I hope he's wrong about that. This place is 5 minutes from Gruene and is a subdivision just waiting to happen. They call it progress, but we call it home

I can get the volume OK, it's the soft purrs that are the killers. I've called birds for years using my voice. Of course I've had a few that were probably thinking, "what's up with that jive turkey"?

Erath my buddy from Missouri is unbelievable with no calls. He can owl hoot, gobble, and all of the hen calls. I have never see someone as good a he is. Pretty cool to be able to do that.

Next time we're together Travis, I'll show you. Stub, you know that I'm computer illiterate. Didn't have time to take any pics of turkey but the bluebonnets were incredible, and I did get some of those.

It's time to throw away you flip phone. Step into the 21st century and get a smart phone. Not only will you be smarter, you can video your next Turkey calling escapades.

yep, I can do the hen chirping and call in all sorts. I was sitting in my truck one very rainy morning out south of Ozona opening week of deer season last year, started seeing turkeys in my rear view mirror, rolled down the door window when they were about 75 yards away heading to the feeder, I started chirping and they all stopped in their tracks, started looking around and turned around and headed back to my truck. Had about a dozen within 15 yards of my truck trying to figure out where it was coming from ... not a beard in the bunch though ... they headed for feeder again after a few minutes.
My dad would use a rusty nail thru a piece of barn wood and scrap on a small flat creek rock.

Have called in several without just using voice including the largest eastern gobbler I have shot. When finishing them off with soft purrs the voice works great for me. It is fun to call in birds without using calls. For locator calls I like the Owl and was the winner of the Locator portion of the first official Texas State Turkey calling contest, got there too late to get in the turkey portion though.
