Hey guys i'm relatively new to the forum and duck/goose hunting in general. (2yrs) I'm a student here at Texas Tech so i hunt around the Lubbock area. Those of you who are pretty experienced with West Texas waterfowl hunting, any advice to a new guy about any tips or tricks for hunting this type of terrain?

Should I focus on watering holes, milo fields, any tricks you've found for better concealment, or decoy spreads?

Just curious to see how other guys use strategies or ideas to hunt successfully on this flatland with little cover.

Thanks guys.

Scout and hunt water holes. Build permeant blinds or use well brushed layouts on water that lacks natural cover. We hunt water that is mostly open but may have some areas with trees or other natural cover. Depending on where the ducks want to be we use layouts or sometimes we are able to hunt in and around trees.

I like to have one or two blinds on small water because it's easy setup and the ducks have less options on where they are going to be. On bigger water the ducks change locations often so we use layouts.

Yes, what ^ said. Look for tanks with submergent vegetation. Most ducks forage on it quite heavily.

BradyBuck what type of blind you do build on smaller water? Trying to figure out what we are gonna do for next season.

Thanks guys thats great advice! I've found the submergent vegetation like y'all mentioned so i've got some ducks, just gotta figure out the best setup. Where I hunt a layout is probably a big asset so i may invest.

I would like to point out and give "Bravo" for doing it right. That is refreshing to see America's yutes asking tactics rather than "where should I go"? So bravo young gun!!

So far we've kept it real simple. T-post and wire fence. Then just brush them in. We have plans for a floating blind for our big water.

Lay out blind will serve 90% of your needs for West Texas hunting. Also, invest in a camo wet bag by Mad Dog. Go Tech!

When I was at Tech I scheduled my classes in the afternoon and hunted a minimum of 5 mornings a week during the season. We hunted out of layouts almost exclusively. There is not much cover out there, and most of the playa lakes I hunted were in the middle of crop fields. Had a couple flooded milo/corn fields that I got to hunt, and man was that something. When goose or crane hunting in dry fields we would sometimes lay in the ruts that the pivots create, which put us even with the ground instead of on top of it. Cranes will spook if they see anything out of the ordinary.

I try to make a trip up there every year to hunt some of my old spots. Guns Up!

All great tips guys! Thanks. I'll have to try them out this year. I've got a lot of good holes but they're in and near cotton fields. I need to get a hold of some milo and corn too.

And yes we raiders are pretty classy guys slinger
