Took the pup for a walk this morning where I had shredded a walk path yesterday. Timely rains over the winter and my initial fertilizing, I ended up with oats to 4', average 2-3'!! The stubble in the photo is 10-12" alone.

have a lot of clover, Peas growing low, but want to let it seed out before I do any more cutting. Best food plot I have had in 3-4 years. Deer still browsing the tops, but would still be hammering it, if I had kept the growth cut and tender.

Wish I had taken a good camera, cell sucks for photos.

Yes a good mowing helps keep it more palatable for them.

What are the deer doing? I've lost about half my deer due to spring hitting here and so many other options for them to eat. I just put out clay peas this evening, but from what I'm seeing on my game camera, the deer that are still coming around are mostly interested in my Black Magic mud hole.

I shredded mine and plowed it under since the deer quit using the plots in late Feb when it got to mature. Then planted soybeans and lab lab.

Eddie, believe it or not, they are still hitting my corn/protein mix. Does look ready to drop any day now too up

STX, I have several types of clover growing that are supposed to have good re-seeding, call all it an experimentgrin. It has been so dry here during the summers, I gave up on Spring plots for now. I am trying now to enhance the natural vegetation to some degree though.

BOBO, the thought of how great it would be for the dirt to turn it under, sure did cross my mind! Actually seeing a few turkey hens using the plot, which isn't a usual thing for me.

I'm planting beans and cow peas first part of May. I was busy getting new stands built and put in place so I'll have to wait until I get off of work. I have a pipeline on the lease that makes an L on our property and I plan on planting 300 yards each way, I have another sendero almost 700 yards that I'm going to plant also, it will be the first two plots ever planted on the property.

SPG, I read your thread and should have up STX reply, seemed you had your answer, so I didn't respond. May is fine for your beans as long as you get water. I know some farmers plant an early and then a second crop to maximize production, so with rain you should do fine. Get a soil sample done as well.

Thanks Western and STX, soil seems to be OK but going to apply a little something to get it perfect. Hopefully the rain keeps on like it has been and we should be in good shape.

I'm sure as soon as I roll the dirt over the rain will quit where I'm at.

Well of word of encouragement grin on long term averages for rainfall...May is the wettest month in your area. Not sure about recent years for an average though eek

Spend the $20 and get the soil tested, you will know in 10 or so days, then you can apply exactly what you need and not a "little something" grin Or just go 200# acre of triple 13 or 15

I though you folks where doing pretty good so far this year? We are still classed as "extreme" drought, but it is easing the further East you go.

Bad storm going on right now while I type this. Over an inch in the last hour with non stop lightning and thunder. Five inches above normal for this time of the year and there is rain in the forecast every day for the next two weeks. I put out iron cowpeas or is it iron claypeas? yesterday.

Looks like the tornado, or maybe just strong winds took out some houses just South of Tyler. From the pictures I saw, they lost their roofs and one nicer, upscale house lost some brick off of it's gable end along with the plywood sheething on the roof. We got 2 inches of rain. More expected Sunday and Monday. Everything is saturated here. I'm not sure when I'll be able to mow again, but at least the ponds are full and everyting is green and lush here. Hope those peas take off, watering them isn't going to be an issue.

I had a special A&M triticale varity one year. Ran hundreds of yearlings on it. They kept it to carpet. I shipped the yearlings off and here came the rains. Next thing I knew it was 4' in places if not taller. I ended up selling it for silage before it headed out.

I made more money off that 120 acres of rocky ground with that triticale then I have ever made off my Winter wheat. Just one of those freak years. Anyway if you have a dairy anywhere with in 100miles. Might be worth it.

BOBO, my plot is only around 1 acre, otherwise you'd have a great idea. When we had the farm and more acreage, I'd let a neighboring dairy friend bale the oat straw in return he would cut and bale my coastal. I still had my cows on the oats until about 1st of march, win win.

More on the way this morning possibly and even better chance tomorrow during the day and then highest chance Sunday night. We have a decent chance of rain thru next Thursday right now.
