Got my Kansas buck back from the taxi. He is my biggest with a bow and I really like the character on him.

Not much to tell about the hunt, but it was dang exciting. I typically will hunt one weekend in September and then take 4 long weekends around the rut. Last season was going to be no different, I went up to Kansas at the end of September to make sure everything was set up and ready to go for November.

Saw plenty of deer while hunting, but no shooters. I set up 6 cameras and headed back for Texas Bow Season and counted the days until November. I missed the first weekend because of the way that Halloween fell and headed up the next weekend. I made it up early on Thursday in time to pull the cards and sit in the truck to run through the cards before the afternoon hunt. Running through the pictures fast, I caught him on Camera and picked him as my target. He had been on 4 of the cameras but not one more so than the others.

The wind made up my mind as to how I was going to hunt him. First evening was a no show, but saw plenty of deer and one very nice buck at a distance. Woke up the next morning and went to my draw stand and low and behold, he showed up...30 minutes before shooting light bang

At one time, he was within 10 yards of the tripod, but it was still too early. By the time shooting light came around, he was gone. He followed a doe to the West and I only had one set that direction, so of course, that is where I was when the afternoon rolled around.

The West Set was a pop-up that I had set up the Thursday when I got there. I call it the bluff stand because there is a steep bluff on one side and a river on the other that creates a funnel to my set. It was a great hunt, ended up having about 20-25 deer feeding around me and in front of me. There was a mature 8 pointer that kept tempting me, but I had picked my deer and was hunting that buck.

As it got later, the 8 pointer was more and more tempting, but I still had plenty of time in the stand, so I never picked up the bow. A new group of does moved in and the 8 was very interested in one. He charged with a short grunt, cut her out and started bird dogging her around the blind. Couple of more grunts and the bushes near the river split and out came "my buck". He ran the 8 back and started dogging the doe. He was at 42 yards and a hard angle, but I was doing everything I could to make the shot easier, but it didn't look like it was going to happen.

The doe eased back across my funnel and as he followed, he put his head down at 30 yards and I let it fly. In the bottom I was hunting, the light was fading fast, but I was pretty confident it was a great hit. I ended sitting there in the blind for the next 45 minutes texting buddies and dying to go take a look.

I ended up walking the mile back to my truck without even looking for the arrow. I didn't want to take the chance of pushing the buck if had just laid up and if he was dead, well, he would still be dead when I got back.

I met some of the other guys I hunt with and we headed back in to look. The tracking job was quick and easy, and thankfully, the deer had made a small circle and was laying about 15 yards from where we parked the truck on the edge of the clearing instead of dropping off the slope of the river or deep into the cover.

To get to the point, I had him mounted and he is now proudly displayed on my wall!!!

Very unique antlers. I like the right turn on him. Very well done.

Turned out great, but your pictures dont do him justice. That buck is WAY BIGGER than he looks in your pictures.

I will have to go back and look, but think he field dressed at 230 and aged at 5.5.

I agree. Not sure what it is about this deer, but the pictures never can seem to catch the full quality of this bucks rack. Everyone I took the antlers to said the same thing...he is much bigger than they expected from the pictures confused2

Yep. I think the mount turned out great, I like the wall pedestal, but the form is just smaller than I expected. This deer FD the same as my dads from Kansas and this is what it looked like on the wall....

Oh, I agree bud. Still a big deer and proud to have him on the wall. Just had a different expectation. Same guy mounted both and very happy with the mount.

Great buck-love the character! Great taxidermy work too!

But, yes, the form looks too small for the deer.
