Headed out to the lease on 4/1 for our Spring opening and my first try at hunting turkey... I couldn't have written a better day of hunting if I had dreamed it up. Heard multiple gobblers and had them calling. Moved around a bit trying to get to the right place at the right time. Seemed like most of who we were hearing were holed up with hens across fence lines. Towards then end of the day, we pumped the breaks... slowed way down and limited the calling to just remind them every once and a while where we were. Right about when we were gonna call it a day (6:30 pm), saw 3 hens pushing alongside where we were setup, followed by a tom. They kept on going, but then about 50 yards away, the tom circled back and walked straight at us in our line of sight with tunnel vision on the jake & hen decoy in front of us. He changed from bright blue to bright red and wasn't having any of this jake. Heart pounding, I took my shot and the bird was down. I've heard of turkey being called the "poor man's elk hunt" and this by far is my new favorite game to go after.

Great job, it is addicting. Makes me wonder why anyone would use a rifle to kill one, much more fun calling them in.

Congratulations. Great pictures. I have called them in and killed with a scatter gun maybe 7 or 8 times. I also shot just above the breast last fall with a .280, and I don't feel guilty one bit. That "poof" of feathers is cool! I will try again with the scatter gun next weekend. They strut right outside of the front door of our place. It helps hardly ever being there.

Congratulations again. Go full-bore, save the wings for flap calling, unless you wanna make a call out of a wing bone.

great looking bird. How long are the spurs? Something cool to do with the spurs if your not mounting the full bird is cut the leg about 1.5 inches with the spur in the middle and put them on a leather strap, always adding your spurs they make a great necklace. I only wish I would of known that when I was killing all the birds I had killed in the past. anyway just a suggestion. very nice bird.
