Bushnell XRS 4.5-30 FFP H-59 reticle, mil-mil, zero stop in FDE is in the safe waiting on a rifle, the deal was too good to pass up. Rifle will be 6.5 Creedmoor, 308, 300 win mag, or 338 Lapua, or convince me otherwise. I want to put it on something I will be able to enjoy shooting and use to get more into long range shooting, not necessarily push the limits of this scope. The 6.5 creedmoor with a suppressor is already my favorite go to round and I am too tight to put many rounds down range with the Lapua (that I do not have a can for), it's just too expensive to shoot much. Want to keep it around/under $3000, for the rifle. Not sure if I want a chassis or adjustable stock or an LR-10 (that I can build) but I want it to fit me. Considering a build like this, http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=476433415 not necessarily this rifle just a similar build.

Are you wanting to shoot long range, up to 1000 yards, or extreme long range 1k-2k yards?

My choice would be something in 300WM dialed in with 225bthp's. I shot the 300 in matches for years but when the 338Lapua came out I figured I needed one so I went that route. But after shooting a 300 with the 225's when they first came out I was shocked how well they shot and they were right on the heels of what the 338 was doing and I believe they buck the wind better and they are more affordable to shoot. So in short order I got rid of the 338 and went back to the 300, all because of the 225's. I think your new scope would be an outstanding mate to a quality 300WM.

Imo 338 is pointless unless you are shooting 1500 plus.

I would say 6.5 or 300wm and would also throw in a few 7mm but only if you are reloader.

300WM would be my first choice followed by a 7mm of some type.

Need more details.

How much experience do you already have? Is it just for target shooting? How far is the maximum distance you plan to push it, realistically? Do you load your own ammo?

Of those choices and the fact you already have the 6.5 Creed I would go with the 300WM. Fantastic round for hunting and does great at distance for target shooting.

Since you already have 6.5 creed I'd look at a 7 mag. If you reload I think you can outperform 300 mag with a 7 mag.

If it were me, and I was wanting to get better at shooting at distance. I should have taken this advice back in 2002.

Here is the recipe:

24 inch 223ai
75 or 80 amax chambered at around 2.4- 2.5inches
Crap loads of LC brass

Cheap to shoot. Zero recoil. Enough ballistics to be worthwhile.

Shoot about 4-5000 rounds of this recipe on a UKD style range and I guarantee you will be a better shooter for it.
Only range time and rounds down range will make you a better shooter.

This assumes you reload, and want to spend time at a proper range.

I have shot quite a bit to 850 yds 5.56, and 308. I worked up a load for the 338 L and sighted it in at 1000. Hasn't been shot since. No regular place to shoot over 1000. Want to hone my skills inside 1000 and I might move the XRS to the Lapua later and shoot past 1000. That said the ranch we go to 2-4 times a year has virtually unlimited shooting range. It would be nice to have the Lapua those times. I do reload. The 6.5 I have is a cheap factory savage truck gun it's scoped for up to 500yds, my 300wm is a skinny barrel hunting rifle. I don't see much chance of me putting many through the 338 until I get a can for it. Just don't enjoy shooting it. I'm torn between another 6.5 and the 300wm mostly. Want a rifle that fits me and is accurate.

Shoot the 6.5 Creedmoor. If you don't like the way its set up, sell it and build a better one. I shoot a 6.5 Creedmoor several days a week to 800, and it is right at home shooting precision and long range.

If you don't want to feed the 338 LM, swap it out for a 300 Win Mag or a 7 Rem Mag you will be able to afford to shoot. Both of those chamberings, properly loaded, will shoot consistently well past 1000 yards.

338lm, 300winmag, and a 7mag aren't what is going to teach you to shoot long range.

Rifles set up for long range shooting in those calibers are for someone who already has learned the fundamentals. Unless of course, you are rich. In that case, buy as much crap as you want. Who am I to judge.

You need something that recoils lightly, and is cheap to shoot. Hence my suggestion for a 223ai. A properly set up creedmoor will do great as well, but will be more expensive to shoot.

Next is range time and training. This is where the real tangible results come from.

I was leaning towards a Creedmoor and will build/buy another setup like I want. I built a SPR 5.56 and have learned a lot from it out to 850 already. Just looking to utilize this bushnell and need a little more range than the 5.56.
