Last Friday I pulled my son out of school around lunchtime to head out. I wanted to roost 'em so we knew where to start Sat morning. After last weekend I knew we might have a long weekend ahead of us. I put "Rio Fever" on the sign out slip for the reason he was leaving school.
We made good time and sneaked quietly to our spot off the usual roosting area by 5:30. Let is settle down for 15 minutes and started to lightly call. 3 gobblers sound off pretty close. Call again and they were comin! Clucked and purred a bit and they were really going off. We successfully pulled off the double! Both birds had 10+" beards and hooks over an inch. We let the third tom walk.
I can't believe after how hard I hunted last weekend that it was over half an hour into it. Sometimes it just all comes together and other times no matter what all you do right it just doesn't. So is hunting I guess.
We got our stuff and hauled butt to a deer blind a few hundred yards away to try to get some hogs at dusk. While we were waiting I called and two went off from different directions. Within 5 minutes they came running in fans out and gobbling away. Heck of a show. We didn't want to take any more until the other guys on the lease get their chance next weekend.
After 15 minutes they finally wandered off. Called again and another big tom came in from the same direction. I guess they were figuring on dinner and a date.
About 10 minutes after he left I called again, but this time we didn't let the taker walk.
It screwed up the hog hunt but I'd rather take that turkey eatin' SOB anyway.
Then the weekend turned on us. My boy went out the next morning to dump the carcasses and while walking back to the 4 wheeler he tripped and face planted right into a big bunch of cactus. Sucks for him, I'm about to take him to urgent care. He looks like he got his arse whooped by a bobcat!
