And am crossed between a Glock 23, Springfield XD or XDM and S&W M&P or M&P Shield. My primary usage will be wearing around the ranch and using for snake control or putting a wounded animal down. If open carry becomes law, would also consider doing that too. For all around purposes that I described, what one of those models would you prefer and why? Thanks.

M&P. I love my shield, but if I was going to carry OWB I would go full size M&P

The mid size Glocks are the best feeling simi-autos I have ever shot. I say go with the 23.

I own an MP40 - Very nice gun, especially after I polished the trigger. I liked it a lot better than the equivalent Glock. I like the grip and grip angle better, it had better sights, and I really like the serration on the slide. At the time the the MP was $499 for either a 9mm or 40 cal. At the time gen 3 glock 19s were 499 and 40s were almost 100$ more.

I do intend to replace the trigger on my MP40 because the articulated trigger is just stupid, IMO.

I have the XDM and love it. Very sweet shooting piece w/adjustable rear sight and 5.25" barrel. Got it on sale for a really good price also.

Only thing about the 40s is they're harder to get rid of than a 9 or 45. Might want to consider that if you plan on ever selling it.

Of those, I prefer the XD or XDm. I like the sights and trigger better.

They are all good. I don't hate any of them except the sheild. If you get a glock 23, get a gen 4. The gen 4 is built for .40, the gen1-3 were designed around 9mm.

I have a Glock 23 and really like it. I also carry it on my hip for around the lease and it's a great gun on the range.

My vote would be for the XD or M&P. I prefer either of them to the Glock, and I'm not sure what the point would be of limiting yourself to a small pistol if you're carrying OWB.

Just like any other decision on choices, wich one feels best in your hand. All three are quality guns but some guns just don't feel right to one person but are perfect for others.

If you search online there have been a couple of reported kabooms in the .40 call Shield.

Why the .40 over a 9mm? 9mm is plenty, particularly for what you listed as your intended uses. MAS cheaper ammo with the 9mm.

One thing I think you will find is people will generally recommend whatever it is they purchased.

If I were buying a .40 today, it would probably be a Sig P229.

Glock for sure, but if you aren't planning on concealing it you might as well go with the 22 over the 23 for more sight radius. I love 40cal it is a happy median between 45 and 9.

I love 40. I don't they're harder to sell than a 45 or 9. Lots of people made the right decision on the 23! Lol

Go to the gun store. Handle all of the pistols that you mentioned. Buy the one that you like the most. All of them are going to be reliable, and all of the triggers are going to suck. It really comes down to the one you like most. For the record, I have owned or shot all of the pistols you discussed. None really stuck out as better than the others to me.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

I had the Shield in 40, loved it. Originally got it bc I was gonna carry with it, but the recoil on it is pretty snappy. I ended up trading for a XD 9 Service model and it is sweet. Shoots straight and hardly any recoil. It is nice paying for 100 rounds of 9 at the same price for 50 round of .40 partyon555 Definitely perfect for what you are wanting, but like others said, go to the store and put them in your hand.

I know it is not on your list but I do like my Beretta Storm PX4 with rotating barrel in 40 cal. It is a compact model.

The price difference on 9 vs 40 has gone down. I can't get 9 for less than $13/box, and that's reloaded. But I can find new aluminum case 40 for $15/box at wal-mart.

I have a few XD'S and XDm pistols and they have been 100% issue free, reliable and accurate. The grips are much more comfortable and fit my hand better than the Glock and M&P.

That's crazy bc I was at walmart Sunday and saw several boxes of 9 for anywhere from $10-$12 and all the 40 they had was $20+. Guess it all depends on where you're at confused2

x2. And you have the option of purchasing the 357 Sig barrel for it.

Can do the same with the XD40.
I chose the XD40 years ago because of the feel. It is not the best for concealed carry but is great OWB.
I for CC I love my Sig P239 in 40.

My Walmart (and they posted it online the other day too for $9.99) has Federal Champion alum case 9mm for $9.97. Just checked Ammo Seek, $11.25 for 9mm Federal (brass) vs $14.95 for 40mm Federal.
