I'm going to go this afternoon and pattern my 12ga Mossberg 935 with extreme turkey choke and my Charles Daly 20ga with extreme turkey choke. I will be shooting the 3 1/2" rounds from the 12ga and 3" from the 20ga. I bought several different loads to test and I will try to post up some pics of the results for anyone whom is interested.

Okay, I went, I shot, I was very disappointed. I bought a Tru-Glo Gobbler Stopper(trying to save a few bucks, first mistake) choke tube for my Mossberg 935 12ga and Charles Daly 20ga. The 20 shot very well with 3" #5's out to 30 yards but the Mossy 12 "TOTALLY" was the pits out to 35 yards. It patterned really well but every shot (2 Each) from 4 different types of ammo shot high and to the left with #4,5 & 6. The six shot held a better pattern but it was all very disappointing. I am open to any suggestions for choke types that might help me with my Mossy. My cousin is bringing me a tube from his Mossberg 835 Turkey gun to try out, it is a extra full turkey. Thanks in advance.

It sometimes happens that a choke tube can over-contrict the pattern and actually make things worse. It happened to me once with a BPS I owned: even the Full choke produced wider patterns than the Modified when using copper-plated 3" sixes and fives. And commercial turkey chokes were a joke in this particular gun. So, just because a choke says Full or Extra Full doesn't necessarily mean your patterns will always tighten up. You just have to experiment and find out. I'm more worried frankly about the "high and left" shooting, which MAY not correct; try different loads and see.

The late Don Zutz, one of the best shotgun writers I've read, once described shotgun chokes as being like an adjustable spray nozzle on a garden hose. You can twist the nozzle and watch the water stream get tighter and tighter...then you reach a point where further twisting only makes the spray pattern worse. The same holds true with your chokes. Your Mossberg, being the individual that it is, may prefer a more open choke to produce its tightest patterns.

I think that I would have missed had I of shot at a turkey. When I say high and left, I'm talking about afoot high and left. I have a Mossberg XF turkey choke to try now, if that doesn't work I will use the full and the modified tubes. I just know that I can kill the heck out of duck with this gun.

I fired 9 rounds from 4 different types of ammo and every one of them shot high and left.

All with the same choke?

I agree with Navasot...just use your duck choke.

I may have to put in my modified steel choke and shoot 3" number 4 steel like I did for the ducks. Hope I don't blast a gobblers head off, it won't make for a very good mount.

935 is the automatic model, the 835 being the pump, both have an overbored barrel. it is pretty amazing how some times a person can over choke.

the garden hose statement above is about as well as I have ever heard it put

try the modified with the same ammo.

what you got to lose, already unhappy with what you have tried

as also stated, your over thinking it

those mossys are made to shoot without a lot of mods

Id also advise try some 3in loads I have had mixed results with 3.5s out of my 835 using the factory x full and regular full choke. last year I used hevi shot or one of those new fangled types of shot with a modified and it was awesome!

Round 2 will begin tomorrow afternoon, different chokes, different loads. Not really over thinking this thing, just want to see if I can make improvements in shot placement and help to improve my odds should the time actually arrive when I do get to take a shot at my first spring gobbler. I have totally sucked so far in my attempts to hunt this elusive and wily creature. Hoping to find a sweet spot on the public that I hunt and call one in for the final showdown.

Okay, finally got to shoot again with different chokes and some different ammo. I finally figured out on the Mossberg 935 that the extremely tight chokes were constricting the shoot to much and causing the shot to blow apart as it exited the barrel and caused the pattern to spread out really wide at 35 yds. I finally ended up with a full choke with the 3 1/2" 2 oz. loads and there was a world of difference. I am confident that I will kill a gobbler given the shot opportunity. One very surprising thing that I discovered was what choke and load would shoot best from my 3" 12 ga. 870 w/28" barrel. I also ended up with a full choke but it was a steel shot tube and the winning performer was a 3" Winchester Super X 1 1/4 oz. steel T shot. It put twice as many pellets in the dead zone as the closest 3" lead shot.

I suppose stranger things have happened but I can't remember when. So with this new found research I will be after my first spring tom. I would also say that my 3" Daly 20 ga. shot pretty well but was a little limited on range compared to the 12's but was much more enjoyable to shoot.
