Yep and they call pistol grips scales also: After pondering your question, 90% of the stuff I read on them posted by various Knife Guild masters call them a scale because that's what they are ( no real explanation )

this is as close as any:

Scales � The scales are the part of the knife that creates the handle.

I believe what they are saying scales do not become handles - until after mounting and detailing work. At what point they become a handle's , I would guess as soon as they are affixed to the knife.

ANd 10% of this dissertation is a WAG, but it sounded good

I believe they're called scales to differentiate materiel for the handle of a full tang knife from the thicker material needed for a single or double tang knife.
