What do the experts say? Is it appropriate for some circumstances and not for others?

Depends on what type of shooting you're doing.

Long range rifle shooting through a magnified scope - No
Short range carbine shooting through red dot - Yes
Pistol shooting - Yes
Shotgun shooting - Yes

Only time I close my non-dominant eye is when I'm shooting through a highly magnified scope, everything else both eyes open.

Prett much nailed it, although I don't shoot shotguns with both eyes open. Carbines all the time, pistol all the time and I only use the sights from the 25yd line and past

Interesting. I'll have to try both eyes open.

I used to close one eye to focus on my bead on the front of my shotgun, but this year I started during dove season shooting with both eyes open and swinging with the bird and carried over into duck season seems to work a lot better for me.

^^This^^

Shooting a scoped rifle, and can't find the target, it is beneficial to turn down magnification, and learn to scan with both eyes. Once the target is found close the non-dominant eye, and increase magnifiaction as needed. Some people get vertigo doing this, though.

Can't shoot with both eyes open. I shoot right handed and am left eye dominant.

You need a left hand rifle.

I noticed when I shoot a red dot(reflex) with both eyes open that was originally sighted in Like a normal scope(one-eyed)

1) That my groups move slightly left of where I am shooting .
so I reset the dot and hit where I aim( both open)

2) That peeps that shoot the same gun (one-eyed) groups are slightly off for them

so is this true with all red-dot or only the Reflex or am I just cross-eyed

Ha I'm left eye dominant too. But can't even begin to try and shoot left handed. I hit target just fine. Trying to do the pistol with both open.

That is due to muscle memory. You don't have the muscle memory left handed, it has to be learned. I can shoot just as tight right handed as I can left (I'm left handed) but I have to think about what I am doing more so than left handed. Mind over matter is all it is.

"Aim" a rifle with one eye closed, "point" a shotgun with both eyes open... This was taught for many years. I tend to follow this technique. I will also shoot pistol with both eyes open like others have mentioned.

First of all, I'm old and I have lost the great vision I once enjoyed. Secondly, I'm not the greatest shot in the world. I do shoot a lot, and probably have developed bad habits. I'm left eye dominant and shoot right handed. I don't like to hold my left eye closed because my facial muscles get tired and start twitching, my right eye starts dilating in sympathy for the left eye which is closed. That combination makes me start to see a blurred view through the scope. The way I've learned to cope with that problem is to get on target with the left eye closed, then relax enough that the eye opens. Normally my right eye will continue to dominate long enough for me to get a shot off. If not, I close the left eye momentarily and try again. If I am going to keep the left eye closed for the shot, I need to get on target and shoot pretty quick, or things start to blur and twitch.

Pistols come equipped with sights for a reason...

If your shooting a shotgun your doing it right. If your doing it with a rifle you should have started at a younger age.

Yes they do. It's for racking the slide one handed. Practicing reloading a pistol one handed is a huge benefit. It's give you the confidence needed if one hand is wounded. Other then that, I really don't pay much attention to the rear sight. I pick up the front through my peripheral vision and use that for shooting my target. I like both eyes open to help in identifying my target as a shoot/don't shoot

Shoot rifle with both eyes open. You cant see anything with your eye closed so how can this help you to see less. If you ever go see the guys that shoot really small groups (bench rest shooters) you will see they all shoot both eyes open one on target one on flags.

I shoot both eyes open when shooting pistols quickly, but I definitely use the sights.

I also am right handed and left eyed. I shoot righty and I shoot as good or better than most people I know. I shoot with the left eye closed. Most folks do not know this and are amazed at the speed that I find a target. It is like anything else, if you practice it, you will get good at it.

I always shoot with one eye closed. Shotguns, rifles and handguns. Never occurred to me to try anything else. Even when I had an EOTech on my AR, I shot with one eye closed, although it was very easy to acquire targets with both eyes open.

Why would someone left eyed shoot with his left eye closed? I'm right handed and right eyed hence I bat leftie and shoot right handed using my right eye.....except for pistol where I use both eyeballs.

I just wanted to write the word EYEBALLS. Funny word.

Pass the gravy.

I am also right handed left eye dominant. I started shooting rifles left handed a few years ago and there was a significant improvement in my abilities. I have now switched to left handed rifles. Holding one right handed is uncomfortable for me now. If you can get past the first 10 minutes switching is no big deal.
