Recently the 17 year old granddaughter brought a few of her cheerleader buddies, all girls, to the ranch. One of the things they wanted to do was shoot. Two of them had never fired any sort of pistol or rifle. Except for the grandkid, these were girly girl city girls. I started them off on the 22 pistol, then on to the 38, then the 9mm Beretta, then my Colt Python. One of the girls was a natural shooter and was bouncing cans like a pro. One of them couldn't hit the ground, and the other was just kinda a decent shot. All in all, they had fun. Nobody broke a fingernail and nobody got a 'Beretta bite'. And, as usual, the biggest attraction was shooting the Python with hot loads. Everybody always loves the Python.

The thank you notes showed up today. They were so happy that they had gotten to shoot pistols and they now want their dads to take them shooting.

All went well, though I wish they'd gotten some of the mud off my old Yamaha Big Bear. What a mess.

April 1st and your already the Grandpa of the year

A couple weeks ago I did the same thing with my niece from DC and a friend of hers, both 16. I taught my niece to shoot when she was about 10 but she only gets to do it when she is down here and her friend had never shot anything bigger than a BB gun. We were shooting at skeet hung on nails in a piece of plywood.

Started off with the Colt Huntsman, but it wasn’t liking the ammo I had and didn’t want to cycle all the time. So we moved on to a .22 S&W revolver then to a S&W .38. They both liked the S&W .22 better.

Moved to long guns. My old favorite is the Winchester 1890. Her friend really thought it was neat shooting a gun that was over 100 years old and she was driving nails with it. The finale was the 20 gauge Citori. It was fun watching one shot take out all the skeet on the board.

They both couldn’t thank me enough but I was having a lot of fun too.


On a side note, I also taught my nephew on that side how to shoot and he is also good. On his quest for his Eagle Scout he earned two of the least seen merit badges now a days; the Small Bore Shooting merit badge and the Shotgunning merit badge.

However, kudos for a job well done.
