When I was a child all the squirrels I hunted ran for the first tree and hid. Now days the squirrels want to get on the ground and run instead of climbing a tree and hiding or running tree to tree. Ive actually tested the ones in my yard out by running at the base of a tree and it doesn't matter if its a 30ft or 60 ft the little bastards will almost fight you to the ground. I can chase them around the base of the tree and they will either bale off it or make their way to the bottom and run through the woods out of sight. If your hunting with a rim fire this can make things a little difficult to get a shot on them. They will actually squeal at me and when I try to locate them, and then they will go silent. Back in the day they would just sit there, bark, squeal, and stair at me and now they get quiet and hide. Im thinking that they are figuring out the way not to get killed. They would make an easy shot gun target, but Ive never cared to shot gun a squirrel. It seems too easy. Has anybody else delt with these crazy acting suckers. They are cat squirrels. I hunted mostly fox squirrels when I was a kid. I hardly ever see the fox squirrel in east TX. Mostly cat squirrels. Ive found the best way to kill them is to sit still and hide and let them come out freely, then shoot them with the .22 Maybe they are evolving. I know from coon hunting that on aim clear moon lit nights a coon will run on the ground instead of climbing a tree. I guess its the preferred method if its available.

I used to love squirrel hunting with my Grandfather. He knew all the little tricks for hunting them. It was Fox Squirrels back then. Now, here in central Tx, I have both those and the cat Squirrels. I never knew that the cat squirrels tasted better than the Fox squirrels. Came as a shock to me.

Cat squirrels? Are those the same as gray squirrels?

Yes. Cat squirrels hang out in the bottoms/around water. Fox squirrels can be anywhere. Grew up squirrel hunting. It's been a long time.

This is me and my red bone after a hunt in central tx. I was about twelve years old and those are fox/red squirrels that I killed in a pecan orchard along Berry creek. The dog and I had something in common. We both liked to hunt and we made a good team. smile

Dad taught me when I was 10 or so and after I got my first single shot Stevens 22 he would let me hunt with the 22 shorts. I kept us supplied with the tree rats as we lived on a farm with creek bottom and pecan trees. When I was around 18 i had a friend went hunting with me, I would let him walk in front of me 15-20 ft. and any squirrel would circle around the tree. After I killed a couple I told him the trick that my dad taught me. elmer

Best tactic was just to sit down and wait on them to settle down and show themselves as you said. Especially if you were using a .22.

A good squirrel dog would stop all that running to ground BS. I think a lot more folks used to hunt with dogs. Maybe that's why squirrels are learning to run to ground now?

We need video grin

I have noticed them suckers staying on the ground more than in the past. The ones that would climb a tree were easy pickin's. It may be that we have shot the tree climbers and all that it left is the new genetically superior running squirrels.
