Here's a couple of springtime snakes I've had the pleasure to see so far this year. Who can identify them?

If it were up to me, snakey #2 would be a very dead snake.

That is a southern copperhead, or Agkistrodon Contorix. Good call, Steve.

Very good guessing sir. Snakey #3 is only the second western coachwhip I've caught. That was a couple weeks ago on a mule deer lease, far west of where I live and catch eastern coachwhips. The western ribbon snake I caught today. Snakey #4 is a water snake, but not a diamondback. It is a juvenile which makes it harder to identify. I do respect your ability to identify these snakes. Thank you for being a real outdoorsman.

#4 is a juvenile blotched. Y'all all win a dove breast, marinated and grilled to perfection. Come on over to claim your prize. Disclaimer: there will be beer.

Blotched Water Snake

Caught a few of each of these in 2014. Coach whip was my first, found it in Mineral Wells State Park.

At my old place in Parker County I had copperheads that would wreck my dogs at least once a month. They usally don't do much damage to dogs but I had my Champion Show APBT get tangled with the biggest one I had ever seen. It measures 4 ft and damn near killed him. Needless to say his show career was over and is left with two nasty scars where the skin had died even with antibiotics, hydrotherapy and dex.

Considering I picked them up with my bare hands and I'm still alive to talk about it, I can't agree with your opinion. Not really scary.

They're laid back around here. Especially compared to our rat snakes, water snakes and coachwhips.

You got 'em all right. I catch eastern coachwhips every year. The western version was a cool surprise.

The ribbon snake is similar to a garter snake.
