So I'm low on venison this year after only shooting one deer last season and am looking at an exotic hunt to fill in the gap until the Fall. I've looked at prices, places, etc. and there's a ton of stuff around where I'm at out outside of Austin so not worried about that.

My question is - what is the best value - size, meat quality, etc. for an exotic hunt? I've only hunted hogs & whitetail and have eaten axis before but am curious if that's the way to go? I've assumed it was going to be an axis doe hunt but looking at fallow, sika, blackbuck, etc I am curious if anyone has a good recommendation since I don't know much about these critters?

Thanks!

Red Deer Hind (doe) (some good deals out there)
Axis doe (prices are rising)
or Eland Cow (largest and among the best)

Just my opinion.

Oryx cows are good eats as well.

For the money right now I think a cull oryx may give you the most money for the buck. Then maybe a cow elk or red deer hind (doe). Axis does seem to be fairly high for the amount of meat they yield although it is delicious.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Thanks for the info guys - this is exactly what I was looking for. My assumption is that processing is the same - just more meat. Or at least that's what I'm hoping for!

Hard to beat red deer hind, some good deals out there and good eating.

Get with guadalupeoutfitters on here. She is our hunt coordinator and she has a smoking deal on red deer hinds and some buffalo heifers in the next few weeks. Thanks

Not cheap, as everyone seems to want bison meat, but maybe look into a cow bison hunt. You can get a lot of great meat.

As some have said eland meat is delicious. It was by far my favorite meat when i was in South Africa. I really want one for the wall, and the fact I could take one here and keep the meat is pretty tempting.

I gotta say I was not a fan of red stag. However I did shoot a male and it was the peak of the roar in New Zealand, so maybe a hind would taste better, but I gotta say I was not a fan.

Nilgai cow hunt. Should be a fun hunt and lots of really good meat from it.

Can't beat price per pound of bison or eland. Hind or nilgai would be good too.

The two best meats I've eaten are hog deer and chital (axis), flavour wise they're the pic of the deer we have. Red deer hinds are a close third though and the one that I eat the most of.

I prefer meat in it's original packaging.

Yessir! About ready to hunt - I'm talking with a few outfitters and have settled on red deer hind.
