In reviewing CCBirddogman's post to the previous thread, I noticed that one of his dogs was wearing the orange dog boots. My question is what brand are those and secondly, how is the best way to secure the boot to the dog? Is there a secret to this? I have tried the boots and I lose one every trip.

I use vet wrap around the legs up past where the boot tops hit, put my boot on and then wrap the boot tops and the vet wrapped portion of the leg with cheap duct tape. I like the cheap off brand duct tape the best because it's thinner and easier to use. Works like a charm.

There are quite a few of the Cordura type orange dog boots out there. I have gone to getting some Gorilla Duct tape and the lay down strip that you put on the dogs foot, I do it with the sticky side out and then put the Cordura boot, then velcro it down, then use more flexible duct tape to wrap not only the top of the boot but loosely around the entire boot to try and get the Cordura boot to last you two or three hunts. If I dont tape over the cordura, they will start ripping by the end of the first day. I found those cordura boots are more comfortable than the Lewis boots and dont rub raw spots like the unflexible Lewis boots do. Cordura is cordura, so I bought a bunch from this place and they were ok https://www.dogbooties.com/shop/1000-denier-cordura%C2%AE-booties/

Sorry not sure on the brand of those. Pretty sure I got them at Gander Mountain in Corsicana. We just put em on with the velcro & then a wrap of duct tape at the top (1/2 on the boot 1/2 on the dogs leg). The Nylon / Cordura type are the easiest and really the cheapest too but they don't stop the thorns. We had a few sets of the tennis shoe type that actually have a rubber shoe tread on them and really liked them the first two seasons, on season 3 they started falling apart.
What causes you to lose dog boots, is usually mud / water. Other than that, these nylon / cordura boots stay on pretty good.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

[quote=NorthTXbirdhunter how is the best way to secure the boot to the dog? Is there a secret to this? I have tried the boots and I lose one every trip. [/quote] Duct tape a collar around the leg with the sticky side exposed and the slick side touching the dog. The collar should be tight and the collar should have half the tape exposed above the top of the boot when the boot is put on the dog. After the boot is on tape the boot on with more duct tape with the sticky side facing the collar and the dog boot. If the collar you made is tight the duct tape --sticky to sticky side should hold the boot on for most dogs.

Also btw - do NOT buy the cordura boots that have the suede type pad at the bottom -- any sewn seam on dog boots will be blown out within the second day allowing sand to get in there and cause potentially health issues with jamming their toes etc - know from experience.

My wife sews some. She makes dog boots out of canvas. You don't need velcro if you use tape right. She leaves a like a shoe tongue of material on the front and the back of the boot. We fold that down over the tape and tape it a second time. Almost never lose a boot.

I made some years ago out of buckskin. I had to take them to a shoe-shop to get them sewed up. They worked fine. I no longer hunt where I need them.
Some dogs need them more than others.

I guess I'm odd. I never used them. I kept my dogs on chat and screenings. Always had dogs mostly black footed dogs that were black and white or lemon or orange and white when I filed trialed them and chased them on horses. Seemed to be tough footed. Never had one slip a pad either.

It depends on the terrain you're running your dog. If the terrain is super rocky(granite) cordura boots will wear out in a matter of hours but the rubber Lewis boots work well. The cordura boots are easier to put on/off and work well keeping burrs out of the dog's feet in more forgiving dirt terrain.
