Do you clean your brass to protect your dies or are you going for polished and pretty, and does it have any impact on reloading?

I just tumble about an hour or two, and don't care about polish or final appearance. Some looks OK, but the .223 that has been through the silencer will still be fairly discolored. Does this make any difference?

I'm posting because I've had a recent problem with stuck .223 cases, which I have never had before...and it coincides with the first large batch of brass that I have annealed. I got to over analyzing and began to wondering about that discoloration on the cases fires with the silence. What is that stuff? Carbon? Salts? Am I creating a problem by further cooking that stuff onto the brass when annealing?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

Wow, lotta questions here...

Dirty brass will scratch your dies. A scratched die will scratch every piece of brass it touches.

I tumble with SS media, so mine comes out as new in a few hours.

That stained 223 brass will come clean in SS media, or other media if given enough time. I can't say if the suppressor has any impact on brass beyond firing non-suppressed.

Yes, I do clean my brass before annealing. I watch the flame color among other signs to anneal brass, so foreign matter would hinder that I suppose. My annealed brass will show very little discoloration, and then none after final tumble in SS media.

I do tumble enough to clean, I just don't go for shiny. I tumbled, decapped (with a sizing die), annealed, trimmed, uniformed primer pockets and flash holes. Since I load on an AP, I ran them through the sizing die when priming and dropping powder. It is during this second pass through the sizing die that I suddenly started having stuck cases (6 in 200 rounds).

There is only about 5000 rounds through this die, and looking at it with a magnifier and bore light, I do not see anything like scratches or abrasion in the die.

I cross posted this on another forum and I believe they have diagnosed my problem. I never considered that lube could settle out...I have not been shaking much before lubing, I suspect all the lube has been used up from the bottle and its left with nothing but the light carrier (alcohol?) in the bottle.

I'll pick up a new bottle of Dillon and shake the he11 our of it before every use.
