I have a Tikka T3 270 mag and 8" YHM suppressor, do you recommend that I cut my Tikka Barrel down a bit so it won't be too long? If so, how much should I cut off?
Thanks,

I cut my .243 and 7mm-08 to 22". My .223 and .308 bolt guns are 20".

I have one 308 20" and another 18". I like the 18" better.

Depends on how much velocity you are comfortable losing

What does that suppressor weigh?
The heavier it is, the more picky the rifle is going to be durong load development, or the search of "the" mass produced ammo. The longer the barrel is, the less maneuverable the rifle is. The shorter the barrel the more velocity you will lose. But I am in the camp of consistency trumps velocity, so I would cut it 20" to split the difference.

First, I'd contact YHM and see what is the minimum length they recommend. You are using a magnum and that means more pressure into the can.

22" but really I wouldn't take a magnum below 24 but that's just me

I wouldn't do that to mag. If you did you will hurt your value imo
I would look for a 20in 308 or 7mm-08

You already have the 300 BO, so get the 6.8. Next time this type of thread comes up you'll be the authority.
edit: Woops, this was supposed to be in the 300BO vs. 6.8 thread.

What if you want a powerful rifle with a supressor but you still want a short barrel? Would a bigger bore, say 338 wm or 375 h&h, be more forgiving of the short barrel?

What if you want a powerful rifle with a supressor but you still want a short barrel? Would a bigger bore, say 338 wm or 375 h&h, be more forgiving of the short barrel? You would get more speed, but I doubt it would help with using a suppressor because you are dealing with more pressure. MAYBE a larger bore suppressor used with a smaller caliber bullet. Contact the suppressor manufacturer to be sure. For example, the SilencerCo Harvester 30 is rated for a 300 Win Mag. When I messaged SilencerCo asking about barrel length, this is what their response was: Thank you for contacting us. The Harvester is rated and warrantied for the following minimum barrel lengths:
7"- 300blk subsonic 16"- 5.56, .308, 300blk supersonic, and other standard calibers 20" magnum calibers up to 300 Win mag
Please let me know if there is anything else we can help you with.

I run the shortest barrel I can that will still do the job. Typically that means 16-20 in non-magnum hunting rifles, 22 in mags.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.
