Strongly considering a Bartlein #14 contour in .308. Would you go the standard 4 groove or the 5R? Looking for longer range (400 to 600 yrd) hunting, also would like ability to reach further. This would end as a more modern M40 clone.

If it's a clone then the choice is no longer yours, if the #14 matches the M40 specs then that's your barrel.
As far as reaching further, barrel contour bares no effect.... But you are on the right track, Barline barrels are GTG

Caliber (.308) and contour should be your first concern. If You have found a blank that fits correctly in those departments, then I wouldn't worry about 4 or 5 groove. Get what you can get.

I agree contour has no bearing on how far you can place bullet on targer. Contour determines how long it takes the barrel to heat up and start stringing shots. However, how long you tell the smith to finish the barrel (I assume you will say 24") affects muzzle velocity and consistency shot to shot for extended strings, again due to barrel heating.

the finish length would be 24", I was just wondering what the two different rifling's would make. Both of these are available from Bartlein.

I've not performed a scientific comparison of 4 vs. 5 grooves. If you're going to run 175 SMKs or 178 A-maxes, I would think you would be better off with the 5 groove, due to bearing surface length of those bullets.

thank you for the replies, seems I need to consider what I'm going to load to be able to determine rifling.

That right there says you need to consider how much practice you are willing to devote to this. Many times I have built a rifle around the bullet I want to run. If you don't already know the bullet you are not prepared to be killing game 400-600 yards. I don't mean that as insult, it is observation from many hours I've spent shooting that far and what it takes to be a consistent hitter that far out.

Killing animals that far you need to consider two important things:

1. Bullet performace upon impact
2. Ballistic coefficient to get the bullet there with as much retain velocity, and therefore retained energy, as possible.

Plus the higher the BC, and the faster you can push it the less it will be effected by wind. The 308 will do the job, but it is significantly more susceptible to wind drift than many other chamberings still fitting in the same action.

I appreciate your input greatly. I have a tremendous amount of time to spend at our range, which I really enjoy. My hunting is second to honing shooting skills. This would be my first custom build and developing the accuracy is paramount.

I recomend you evolve to the point of a cold bore shot at distance. It is what I do first, or the only thing I do when I am leaving my range. No matter the wind, make your first shot at distance, challenge yourself. When you miss, ask yourself why you just missed that shot. Was it an elevation error, shooter error driving the rifle, or did you misjudge the wind? That is why I miss, I misjudge the wind. I began this excercise over a year ago and started at 500 yards. You decide the distance to start from. If you end up 100% hit at 300 yards, move out, repeat until you are hitting that piece of steel at your 600 yard goa, all the time. The cold bore shot is the hunting shot. No checking 100 yard zero first, no sighter to get wind, dial up, hold wind, drive the rifle correctly, witness impact or miss, learn from what happened, improve your skills.

You're definately a long ways away. I go prairie-doggin once a year in your country.

You should try the antelope, that will give some ranging shots. I have a friend who has range land along the OK. line. Lots of dogs, yotes, some cats and hundreds of pronghorn.

As long as we're just visiting, who would I contact to build this rifle? As soon as I get the barrel I will have what I need to start the build.
