My son is in college, limited funds and wants to put together an AR. I have absolutely no knowledge of them except there is an upper and a lower. His plan is to piece it together as he has funds available kind of like a lay away plan. The kicker is he wants to do it in 308. Where would you start a project like this?

I assume from what I have read that the lowers for a 5.56 won't work with the 308? Any guidance appreciated!

He will need a .308 upper and lower. You can buy them together or seperate. This is just an example.

The lower has to go through an FFL. So that is where I would start.

Start with a 308 lower. There are 2 different types (I think) so decide which way he wants to go: AR10 or LR308. Once he has the stripped lower, then he can piece together the rest and build the gun how he wants.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

^^ this they had a .308 carbine upper for $299 last week.

Edit: actually they still do. http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php...harging-handle/

They also have this midlength rifle kit. All you'd need is a lower. http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/psa-pa10-18-ss-mid-length-rifle-kit.html

Anyway, they have sales everyday. So just figure out what you want and piece it together.
