Anyone have any experience with one? How does it compare to a 30.06?

depends on where you are at? How big are your deer, but most important is size of bullet and shot placement. Each one will kill it and each one the deer could run off.

They will both result in death to the animal. The 300 just takes a little guess work out of longer range shots.

Used a 300 Win Mag for the last 20 years. Great caliber for almost all game in North America. Killed 50+ whitetail with It over the years, plus a whole bunch of other game. As far as the question comparing it to a 30-06 for whitetail, I don't think it makes any difference with the same weight bullet. The deer certainly will never know the difference.

It's a little more powerful than a .30-06-with a little more recoil to go with it. It's a fine caliber, one of the finest.
Probably a little overkill for most whitetails but a lot of guys love them some .300 win mag.

You can swat a fly with a flyswatter, a 12 ounce hammer, or an 8 pound sledge. All will kill it.

In shooting game with both rounds over the years I would say that trauma to the meat and the wound channel is greater from the 300 when shooting the same grain bullets due to the higher velocities, especially when hitting denser tissue or bone. Other than that all I could say is the 300 gives the flatter trajectories for those longer shots.

I'd say it's a little much for Texas deer. That's a pretty broad statement. East Texas or hill country 100 yard feeder shots are a damn sight different than Trans Pecos/Big Bend canyon hunting. It ain't necessarily "a little much" for a state as big as ours

It ain't necessarily "a little much" for a state as big as ours How far is the average person gonna make an ethical shot? 200, 300 yds? Maybe even stretch it to 400? A .300 is not needed for those distances. There's a multitude of smaller calibers that will kill the deer just as dead at those ranges. And before the accuracy argument comes into play, if you can't hit vitals at those distances with any caliber, why take the shot?

I'm assuming you already have a 30-06 based on the way the question is worded. If so, I wouldn't bother replacing it with a 300 win mag. If you are buying a rifle and trying to decide between the 2, I'd still probably say 30-06, but that's assuming that you hunt in the same manner that MOST Texans(myself included) hunt. Sub 200 yard shots under a feeder. If you are really going to try to reach out there, the 300 will do a better job just because of the velocity. But, and I don't intend to be rude, since I really don't know your motivation for asking the question, if you can't kill a deer with a 30-06 at normal distances, you probably can't do it with a 300win mag either.

If you like shooting the 300 Win Mag it's fine......if you like shooting a 30 06 that fine too. Both will kill a whitetail very dead with room to spare.
BTW, if you look at the ballistics of the Hornady Superperformace ammo in 30 06 it is creeping up on the performance of a standard 300 Win Mag

I use a tack driving .22-250 sometimes, got lots of other calibers to choose from, I got a friend that brags about his 300 win mag....he cant hit nothing cause he is flinching when he pulls the trigger...shoot what makes sense for you.

I thought we all agreed the 7mm-08 was the best Texas deer round in existence for the non-reloader.

Anyone have any experience with one? How does it compare to a 30.06? It doesn't compare performance wise, the 300 shoots circles around the 06 with any bullet choice, yes you get a little more recoil but that's the price of performance. Not only is it an excellent deer rifle it's a great all around rifle, if you hand load even better.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I have used both. Shot placement is every thing. With a 300 a close ranges you need to neck shot or you will damage allot meat. The 300 mag will do better at longer distance or on mule deer or elk. Most shooters have trouble with the recoil and not make an well placed shot.

The apparent widespread recoil sensitivity amongst Texas hunters has been one of the most surprising things I have seen since joining the THF.
