Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and had a few questions about an axis hunt I am going on next week. The hunt will be southeast of Kerrville, on a small spot, only about 20 acres of low fence, I hunted there in January of 2014 and took an axis doe. One of my questions is what can I expect an axis buck in this area to look like this time of year, hard horned, in velvet or bare? I know that they can be in anyone of these forms anytime of the year I just thought maybe someone would know what they are predominately like in that area this time of year. Another question is how to get them to stop, on such a small property it seems like they just pass through, there are no feeders or anything like that. I appreciate any help ya'll can give me.

As you mentioned they can be in any stage of horn development at any time of the year. The majority of the Axis bucks I've seen are about done growing by May and normally rubbed out by mid May. As stated before it can be different with bucks that share the same property. It depends when they were born. If I were you I'd set a fresh bale of Alfalfa in a spot where you can watch it without being detected. Watch the wind and just get comfortable and wait them out!! Good Luck with your hunt. Baker

Litter the area with corn and protein and fresh alfalfa
The groundwork of all happiness is hunting.

The majority of them are just finishing growing right now. It would be a great time to get a nice velvet buck mount done.
