We haven't had coyotes around here but have heard that they were starting to be a problem. Was hunting in the contest so we made a few day stands. This stand was about 6 or so in the evening. Wind was almost at my face but due to the country we were in it was the best option. We had a brushy hill to our 8-10 o clock position, fairly open ground in front where the call was with some scrub brush, and a draw at our 3 o clock with heavy brush. The call was about 50 yards in front of us with a mojo puppy dog. About 4 min in I see movement at my 830-9 oclock position coming in at a little faster than a trot, at about 20 yards! Where he came out of the brush he couldn't have been more than 50 yards or so from the call, maybe a bit closer. My gun was facing the call at 12 so I had to move left slightly to get a shot. He took a hitch step and looked in my direction but then focused right back in on the call and puppy and kept coming. I was afraid he was going to get to close to the call and hightail it so I took the running shot, at that distance he made a HUGE target, with my scope dialed to around a 6. Hit him in the guts, he spun around biting, hit the dirt and I put a round in his head. This all happened very quickly. What a rush!

Nice; makes me wish I was out there in the field now too!
Good job on the quick follow-up-shot; unbelievable how many 'one shot dropped and then I can't believe he got up and ran off and I had to track him all day' heros that there are on this forum; and good to see you are not one of 'em.

I have been calling coyotes for over 35 years and it is still a huge rush for me. Never get tired of the feeling I get when I call one into range. To fool a top of the chain predator is a thrill indeed. Congratulations!

My dad lives between Eldorado and Menard and tells me he saw a coyote recently. They retired to ranch there 25+ years ago and haven't seen or heard coyotes up until now.

Historically that area was sheep and goat land and was heavily monitored by government trappers. Heck, we didn't get pigs till 2 or 3 years ago.

Thanks everyone, I cant get enough of calling, luckily I'm in the ranching business so I have a good excuse for my wife. She knows how much a few extra kids can effect our income so she tells me "Go Get em".
yeah, it is still monitored by gov trappers but I dont know if they have the knowledge those old timers did. Plus, back then, livestock was their lively hood, ranchers were constantly in the pastures keeping varmints in check. I hear a lot of gripping from some of the ranchers that come to the store but I dont think they've set a snare or ran a call in 30+ years.

Pegasaurus, I was using waning jack as my first call. I bought a new foxpro because my older one soiled itself in the bed. I'm really impressed with the new remote. Plus it has waning jack and eastern cottontail, which are two calls that I know haven't been used in the country I tend to hunt so it's nice to have something different. I still love lighting jack and babee cottontail, and snowshoe HP, constant producers when it comes to fox and bobcat.
