I'm looking for a holster to use in uspsa shooting for my Ruger 5" 1911 that possibly won't scratch it up. This is my first stainless 1911 so I'm no real sure how easy they scratch but would like try to keep it looking good.

No such thing... Stainless will not show wear as quickly as bluing, but over time and with use, you will get small scratches and wear from a holster. That is just how it is. The only way to avoid holster wear is to leave the gun in the box in the safe.

I have been through a few holster for my Kimber, it has stainless slide and black frame, it now resides in a case for life. It has scratches in the stainless that are down both side if the top of the slide, and missing the black coating on the front of the trigger guard.

Any dirt/debris will scratch with a plastic or Kydex holster. To minimize this, you would need something with a suede liner. Even then, you have to keep the holster clear of debris. Get a holster with some kind of liner. You can still keep a firearm in good shape. Just shoot the thing, though. It's a Ruger after all, and the firearm is a tool. And scratches ad character, IMO.

Garrett Silent Thunder is a Kydex holster with a thin leather liner. As others have said, you'll still get scratches on the gun if you carry it.

I felt the same way when I bought my first new Sig 226. I had always wanted one, saved up a couple of years, and was determined to keep it in good shape.
The best thing I ever did was put some scratches on that gun. It transformed from a gun that traveled to and from the range in its case into a gun that just traveled with me wherever I went.

Scratches are gonna' happen, but there's no reason to invite them. Check out "Wilson Combat Tactical" holster. Kydex holster with leather look and suede lined. I don't have one personally, but a few buds have them and they're pretty nice. Run about $70 edited to add: Hey here's a link! http://shopwilsoncombat.com/Tactical-[censored]...tinfo/TA1BKR15/

It's funny how you buy a handgun brand new then use it for 35 years, and all that time it still looks brand new to you until you see it next to one that's never been used.

Get kydex. It's fastest and toughest. If you're shooting USPSA, just accept that your guns are going to show some wear. Heck, I've worn the finish off of Glocks. It just happens.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

Yes I know it will still get scratches guys but I try to take care of the stuff I spend my hard earned money on.
