Hey y'all. I am new to the forum and relatively new to Texas hunting (I've lived here less than a year and have been hunting here for 4 months now). I am really enjoying reading around the site here. Anywho, I killed my first axis buck on Sunday night (free range, in Edwards County). The buck was in velvet, so I made sure the cape got to the taxidermist within 24 hours. It was an amazing experience and I am beyond thrilled. In all the excitement, I didn't think to measure anything. I don't really care all that much as I know it isn't going to break any records. The experience and the backstraps are more exciting to me than the numbers. However, my father in law owns the ranch and started asking me for some measurements after I had already turned the deer over to the taxidermist. I was wondering if some of you exotic gurus could give me some estimates of rough overall score (ROE and/or SCI) and your guesses on the main beams. Like I said, I know it isn't a trophy by the numbers (it's a trophy to me :)), I am just curious. I have attached some pics below. I am about 5'5" if that helps you judge it. Thanks in advance for your inputs.

Well done young man but be careful, Axis hunting will get in your blood!!! up

I'd guess him at 28-29" in length but I'm no expert in anybodys book. Congrats and welcome to the forum..... Baker

Great job and welcome to the forum.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Congrats..nice axis...pretty shape to the antlers.

If it were me I would call the taxidermist and get the accurate measurements rather than guess from a photo.

Again, great looking axis.

My taxidermist has been very busy so I tried to leave her alone but I did I call and ask for a measurement...she texted me 19" on the right and 18.5" on the left. It can't be right. I wonder if she meant to type 29" and 28.5".

I would agree with you...no way those main beams are only 19" and 18.5"

Hope she is better at taxidermy than she is with a tape measure.

Congratulations. You can get a licensed tropaeologist to do an official measure for you per TGR standards. There are quite a few in Texas. Usually pretty easy to find. You can do this after the cape has been mounted or before. Not a problem either way. You can probably find someone to score it for you at http://trophyrecords.org/BecomeATropaeologist.aspx. They are all nice fellows (and a few gals) and are always willing to help. Some folks charge a small fee but it's usually reasonable.

This forum has been dead for ages, but thought I would add this: A few weeks after my first axis buck, my little brother flew down from Kentucky and we were able to get him his first axis buck (before this all he had ever shot was a whitetail back home with a bow). His was bigger than mine, but that makes it even better. He shot it as the last bit of light faded on the last day of a 4 day hunt. It was free ranging, as was mine. He went home ecstatic!
