Last night I had coyotes in a tree line south of my feeder. I turned on my hand held Mimic call and started playing a female coyote call. The yotes kept responding to my call but would never break cover from the tree line and come to the pasture. Any suggestions on what I could have done to get them to come to my call?

Could have been females, thy aren't as territorial as males.

Got rabbit, bird, or maybe a pup call?

I have a variety of calls of my electronic call plus a few hand calls. I've never been successful at calling, so next time I'll try a different call. Thanks

Knight and Hale Cottontail Rabbit call. They may not care about other yotes at the moment, but they always like to eat... up

The coyote pup in distress rarely fails. They could of winded you or are aware of your presence. They have a sixth sense like the crow. If there has ever been any form of bad run in with a human in that area they will steer clear at all cost. Its a survival tool. The coyote has survived through centuries of people trying to rid of them and theyre still here.

I would go through your hand calls and pick one of those, if they are call shy, that may make the difference. If they hear you come in, or see/smell you, they will hang up or avoid you like the plague. (and be 10x's smarter). Park as far away as you can and ease in like you are hunting a record buck and mind the wind. Sometimes you just have to call the hunt off, if the conditions aren't good.

IMO, that pack could have been controlled by a Alpha Male that would not let any members of the pack break away and respond to the call. Not sure if that was the case here but I have experienced this behavior before. I have had packs hang up and could hear the aggression from one dog to keep the other dogs in check. If you can make the lead dog mad enough he will come running(challenge calls). But it has not always worked for me.

Dennis has some good points as well.

Don't take this the wrong way. Its the truth with a bad joke at the end. My mom took some pictures of a coyote chasing her very noisy jack dog back and forth down her cyclone fence row. Mom thought they were just playing and I told her that the coyote was trying to coax the dog out of that fence to eat him. She didn't believe me. She got another jack dog that the resident jack didn't like, so she just let it run free outside of the fence. One day she went outside and there was 3 coyotes playing tug of war with the free ranging jack russel in the pasture. Guess what they wernt playing, they were trying to eat him. Mom ran in the house and got her deer rifle and shot at the coyotes. They ran off, and the lucky jack limped home. You could probably tie one of them noisy jacks up and call in some coyotes. I think it would work. roflmao
