My wife knows the combination. But if something happened to both of us, nobody would know it or be able to get into it. I am exectutor of my parents' estate, but I don't have a clue what the combination to their safe is. I'll be interested to see the answers.

My wife and sons know the combination. If something happens to all of us I really don't care what happens to my guns after that.

She'll just have to hire a locksmith. She knows that the stuff is it there, and that it's valuable, but doesn't have or want to know the combo. She also knows that my desire is that she hold onto the guns, until the kids grow up. And she knows that the kids are my successors on my NFA trust.

I'm not sweating it...

How often do you change your combo? If never, I wonder if you can put it in your will.

In a safe deposit box seems easy or you could put it in an encrypted file on your/her computer. Google passkeeper for some free software.

Your will becomes public record and can be seen by anyone. That wouldn't be a good idea.

Mine is written down and locked in someone else's safe that I trust. And I have the combo to others locked in mine.

My wife and daughters all know the combo to the safe. They all get in there from time to time anyway. It is not written down anywhere.

I don't even know the combination, if it accidently locks I'm in trouble.

One person knows mine, I have my will and the business cards for my Estate Planner and my Financial planner on the top shelf. Everything is there in a folder when I croak.

Made this mistake never doing this with my Dad, swore I would never leave my beneficiary without a clue what I want, when I'm dead.

I also left an inventory of all my guns, with their approximate value and a list of who NOT to sell them to.

Safe #1 is keyed. I have a key, wife has a key, and another key is in safe #2.

Safe #2 uses a combination. If my wife forgets her own birth date, she will also forget the combination. As long as my daughters remember their mother's BD, they will know the combination too.

Do safes sit off the ground slightly? You could write the combination on the bottom so it could be read by someone who knew to look there using a mirror.

Its written on the side of a piece of door trim in one of the rooms in the house. Or somewhere like that.

Reminds me. I should probably invest in a safe. I told myself I would buy a safe once we had 3 or more guns in the house. We have 12 now.

You definitely do need to have it written down somewhere...age sucks..one day I stood in front of mine and the combination just wouldn't come to me anymore...damnit...

My wife has it in her phone, just numbers in a row not hyphenated, note says combo.

Thought about following that approach. However, I would ask my wife to only record the numbers without any notes at to what they are, just in case a thief finds her phone. She should be able to remember why she keeps the numbers in her phone.

The combo for the safe (along with the instructions for opening it), passwords to online bank accounts, retirement accounts, investments, insurance policy info, scans of car titles, inventory spreadsheet containing descriptions and serial numbers (both guns and household valuables), a photo inventory of the house, scans of birth certificates, trust documents, will, copies of tax returns, and some other legal docs are all stored on two encrypted USB drives, with a password hint that our kids would be able to figure out. One is locked away in a file drawer in my office, the other goes to the safety deposit box. Every year at tax time, they get updated. That couple of hours updating is worth a lot of piece of mind.

My safe combination along with all of my passwords for everything is on a password protected word document.
