What one would you go for for basic sidearm carrying in the field (Snake protection and putting wounded animals down). Is the recoil between the two significantly different due to size and weight differences?

Which Springfield? I love my shield, and think the xd line is a little overpriced.

I would lean towards a 9mm shield for carry usage. I've heard the recoil on the 40 shield is harsh (although I've never shot one).
If you're stuck on the 40, I'd go with whichever is bigger.

If you're stuck on the 40, I'd go with whichever is bigger. Shield 40 is a little snappy, but my wife can handle it no problem, and I can mag dump it comfortably.

I've got the Shield 40. Love the size. It rubs the thumb web a little after 6 or 7 mags of quick firing.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I have to admit, the Shield felt really comfortable in hand and light. Just a little concerned that light means significantly more recoil but if not, that will likely be the way I go.

I own both the Shield and XD in 40 and really like them both. The Shield is lighter/thinner so is a much better carry option but the XD has the mag capacity if you can carry it. I don't think you can go wrong with either.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

Maybe a little more because it is light, but it's not bad at all IMO.

I have a pair of XD40s and neither has EVER malfunctioned. Great pistols...but not so easy to conceal. They're quite a load. I'd take that into consideration.

Dad has an XD40 compact and it doesn't seem too snappy to me. Flawless function and dead on accuracy so far.

I've got a shield in 40 and love it. Took a little to get used to the recoil, but once you learn it's a nice shooting gun. Personally, if I could buy another pistol to carry around at the lease, it would be a full size instead of a compact, just because they are a little easier to handle. Can't go wrong with either though.

I just got the XDs 9mm. Recoil is non existent and shoots great so far. I'm already in love with this gun

I had an XD40 and loved it really wish I hadn't sold it but oh well. Just got a shield in 9mm and have yet to shoot it but have heard great things.
