Got a friend from Arkansas and another from Indiana out on the lease with me this weekend. The fella from Indiana toted along a custom rifle in 7mm Allen Mag. His bullet is a 180 Berger and it scoots along at about 3350.
The rifle is built on a Nesika Bay action and I'm not sure what the barrel is, but it's a rather light 30-incher. He's got a nice Nightforce on the rifle, the rings look like Badger.
That rifle will get it! He popped a coyote at a ranged 863 yards this morning. Slick. I don't think I'll ever want a rifle that takes twice the powder that a .30-06 does, though!

I need that rangefinder..... I have a heck of a time ranging coyotes over 400 or so.

Beast of a round. That is the action used on Dakota rifles these days isn't it? Beats me, kmon. I always thought Dakota had their very own action. Found out the barrel on the 7 Allen Mag is a Lilja.

Ya know, that sounds like my buddy Scott Schillig. He sent me a pic of the coyote.
If Scott can see it, he can kill it. He was going to stop by my place at Bowie on the way back to East Texas but was running short on time. He'll be by in a couple of weeks.
Dang nice guy who is good at dang near everything.

Nice guy, isn't he?
He came to build docks on a couple of our mutual friends ponds/lakes. So far, East Texas monsoons have set him back quite a bit.
BTW, I heard that you made a nice 300 yd shot on the other one.

No, Dave, that was our friend from Arkansas. I shot a skunk the night before. I'm kinda proud of that skunk anyway, it was out in the field about 70 yards maybe and I had nothing to use as a rest. I dunno what different kinds of skunks there are around here, but he was one of the little ones. Not much to aim at!

Wow that sure is fast but at around 65 rounds per pound of powder not going to be cheap to shoot. But if you can afford the rifle you can afford to shoot it. Way beyond my marksmanship skills too. Good looking rig.

I asked him why he gut shot the dang thing. He said it was kind of embarrasing but he doped the wind a little wrong.
BTW, he is not a rich guy; just an unmarried guy that buys the right tool for the job. He has a lot of "right tools" and spends a lot of time researching.

But he's got turrets and a bigass bolt handle. NIX on the bigass bolt handle. The bolt handle on that rifle is a bit longer but looks very much like a Model 70 bolt handle. Regardless, he uses the rifle for it's intended purpose but also uses more conventional cartridges and sporter rifle configurations, also for their intended purpose and within their limitations. That Nightforce has an MOA reticle, BTW. I can also tell you that the man does not start every rifle, caliber, or bullet selection with a consultation of BC tables.

Wow! Can't take a joke today.
I'm quite sure I am familiar with what he goes through to be able to make shots like he did on the coyote.

O.K. I finally registered and got a chance to reply. In case anyone is wondering, here's the specs on the rifle. Nesika Bay Model M Hunter Lilja SS, fluted 1-9, 4 groove, 28" barrel, #6 contour APS Slim Painkiller muzzle brake Jewell trigger Manner MCS-GAT stock Defensive Edge adjustable cheekpiece HS Precision Detachable Magazine system Nesika 20 moa SS rail base NightForce Ultralight rings NightForce NXS NPR1 5.5-22x50mm with zero stop Rail mounted ACI Scope mounted scope level Harris S-BRM 9”-13” Bipod with Swivel Lock It's chambered in 7mm Allen Magnum caliber (wildcatted .338 Lapua). Kirby Allen is the gunsmith that built it, here's his website http://www.apsrifles.com/ . The Berger 180g VLD was pushed by 108 grains of WC872 for a MV of 3350-3400+ depending on temp, etc. Rangefinder was the Swarovski 1500. I still have to learn how to read the wind better...... I don't shoot at paper with it much, basically all I did was shoot at paper to get the load dialed in, then shoot at steel or rocks, etc. if I'm in an area that allows that. In Colorado I ran it out to 1330 yds, and the 2nd shot impacted in the first bullet crater, so I called it good. When doing the load development, I got lucky in my wind reading and ended up with a 3/4" c-c group at 300 yds. I switched to Bergers after about 200 rounds down the tube. I was shooting 175g SMK's and running them 3450 - 3490 fps (that's where the accuracy was) but they started going *poof* about 50 yds past the muzzle. The Bergers, going a bit slower, don't do that, plus the Bergers are more accurate than the 175g SMK's at the slower velocity, so that was a no brainer. I have a bunch of 200g Wildcat Rebated Boattail bullets for it, but I haven't had the opportunity to play with them much, so I don't have an accurate load for them (yet). If they shoot well out of the gun at a reasonable fps, they will be my go-to bullet for long range because if I can run them around 3300 fps, the real world bc is .91. FWIW, the 180g Berger performed great on a cow elk at 705 yds in Colorado. High shoulder shot, about a $0.50 piece sized exit, she dropped at the shot and didn't run off. Didn't tear up much meat either, as the bullet missed the scapulas.
