Web-based hunting picture sites... Am I being paranoid or passing on a stellar idea to snatch up productive land? #5648768 03/12/15 10:42 PM

Last night I was watching one of the hunting channels and the hosts were offering their new website which included some type of bragging board/game cam hosting service. In their introduction, it used an aerial mapping source (presumably Google Earth) to pinpoint the exact location of where the photo/game cam was located.

What is stopping the site's administrators from tracking the location of the biggest deer posted to their website (alive or dead) and, since the geographic location is known already, cross reference that to track down the owner and a. purchase the property outright or b. cut out the existing lessee?

The show hosts are very deep pocketed hunters and talked about the myriad of properties they already own or presently have leased.

I have often laughed at our friends in the migratory section about lake naming, but has this mentality already crept into my psyche?

I brought this up because I just received an e-mail from TPWD about a similar program which means the data would be publicly available.

I have disclosed the location of my hunting honey hole a few times, but simply a generic location relative to the nearest town or area of a county nothing as specific as putting an X on the spot. Should I go join the tin-foil hatters in the corner, or no?

Unless you are legally required to provide specific coordinate information, I would avoid doing so. It isn't apt to benefit you by doing so and may garner undue attention to your location.

There is no way in ____ that I would I give a stranger GPS coords to my hunts. Especially if the harvest was significant enough that I'd want to proclaim it to the world. Ever. And asking someone to do so is the dumbest damn thing I've heard. Aside from someone giving it to them. Then that would be the dumbest damn thing I've ever heard.

It's a thinly disguised attempt to mine data. Data that benefits the entity mining it. And who wouldn't want a database of locations where specific species of game was harvested. Cross reference it with state plat records and you got the land owners name. You said they've got deep pockets, if they have more money to throw at a LO to lease their property than you do, you can kiss that lease goodbye.
