So Ive always wondered...on velvet antlers...which I think are really cool...when you get a deer mounted, what is done to the velvet ....if anything to make it last? Maybe that's a dumb question but I was curious..

I believe there are two ways to preserve velvet antlers (by the way that link QuitShootinYoungBucks has some good advice).

One way is to preserve them using chemicals... I thinks it's best to care for the antlers per the above link and get them to a Taxidermist who knows how to do the preservation.

The second way is to freeze dry the antlers....again, this is something left for the professionals and should be coordinated with your taxidermist.

In both techniques time is of the essence. DO NOT just stick the antlers in a freezer and assume you have time to get them to a taxidermist. Keeping them in a freezer will just cause freezer burn.

I think we use to use phenol "carbolic acid" to save the velvet. Inject it in the antlers under the velvet.

Methanol. Plain and simple.

Used it 5 times now. 1 wt, 2 axis and 2 mule deer. Works perfect. Soak for 10-14 days.

I posted a reply on this subject last night and I guess it evaporated. When you apply the phenol carbolic acid don't get it on your skin, in your eyes, and don't inhale the vapors. Wear rubber gloves, goggles, and a mask. This is a safety message. Hate to see it erased.
